Question about 1988 Jaguar XJ6

1 Answer

1988 Jaguar xj6

My jaguar starts up fine the first time around and drives well, but when you try to turn it on the second time it won't unless I push the gas pedal down. for example when I go to work it turns on fine and drives good, when I come out of work it still turns on properly. Is the in between turn on and turn off that really gets to me.

Hi Billy

You did not specify if it was a 2.9 or a 3.6 ? I hope it´s the latter !

Going by your brief report on your Jags symptoms, the plan of action I recommend are as follows.

First check the oil filler cap has a rubber ring, and has not fallen off, this will give you an air leak, and it happens a lot.
Check the big hose from the flow meter to inlet manifold, is not split or insecure below.
This too will draw in air, and throw a spanner in the works.

Remove and inspect and clean the distributor cap and rotor, for cracks or tracking marks, and clean the terminals, a spray with WD 4O before you put them back on.

Give the crank sensor a clean, and check for any metal filings on the magnetic end of it.
It´s situated 1O O'clock, at the front crank pulley.

I recommend you renew the coolant temperature sensor, which is located at the rear of the thermostat housing on the L/H front of the engine.

As they are common to give problems, and work along with the supplementary air valve, and the idle speed valve, forming the equivalent of an automatic choke.
This would tie in with your problem.
To renew the sensor, remove coolant cap and refit, and disconnect the 2 pin electrical connection, and unscrew, and fit the new sensor.

Carry out these tasks, and give me feed back as to how you got on.

Good Luck !

P.S. Don´t forget to give me a FixYa rating, please !

John.

first thoughts are check your auto transmission fluid level (with engine running with car on level ground) and linkage to gearbox.

No heat jaguar 88 xj6 fan wont turn on cool air out the defrost vent

I have the similar problem with both my Jaguars, one is a 1988 Jaguar XJS, the other is a 1987 Jaguar XJ6, both blow COLD air out some vents while it blows warm air for heat. I heard it had something to do with the cold air blowing as a dehumidifier, I don't know if this is true, but it is really annoying to have both cold and warm air blowing when I need heat in these cold Canadian winters. If you find out please drop this website a note and let us know how you solved it. thanks.

Fuel pump is bad or plugged fuel filter it seems. Crack the line from the filter leading towards the engine first. If gas starts squirting out fast, you have good pressue. If not the filter is plugged or a bad pump. How old is the fuel filter by chance? If original its plugged up by now

1988 Jaguar xj6 No forward in the automatic trans rev works fine

the linkage is just a slight bit off, it parks between gears when you shift into the slots. Disassemble the shifter from the center console, and slowly move just the cable its self between the positions and see if you have forword gears. When you find and sync the gears, then tighten the cable to the shifter so the positions match the notches in the shifter.

1988 jaguar xj6 engine turns over it wants to start and at times run for a few seconds

Hi
Sounds like fuel.
Check fuel inertia cut off switch is pushed down for on.?
Check for fuel pressure to the engine.
Sure your fuel is not water contaminated ?
Possibly the flow meter is faulty, or has an air leaks on the hose going to the inlet manifold.
I see you posted this on the 14th Dec O8 so perhaps you have it running OK by now ?
Good Luck !
John.
