Well thanks for the hint where the thermostat was. I replaced it and still have no heat. Jeep does run a lot cooler so I guess it was worth the $5.00. The blower only put out cold air, it really sticks when it’s below 0 out. My heater core is not leaking but I have not gotten to it to see if it is hot or not. After that I am out of guesses.

To install a thermostat on Your 1999 grand cherokee jeep. You will be needing these instruments, Container, Clamp tool or vise-grip pliers, Thermostat and gasket, 10mm socket or wrench, Razor blade, Flathead screwdriver (if necessary). Then You carefully follow the steps below:
Open drain **** on the radiator to drain the coolant from your Jeep Grand Cherokee. This drain **** is located on the lower right side facing the rear of your Cherokee. Use a seal able container and reuse the coolant if it is relatively new and clean.
Follow the upper radiator hose to the point where it meets the thermostat housing. The thermostat is located inside the housing. Use a clamp tool or vise-grip pliers to loosen the clamp holding the hose to the housing. Work the end of the radiator hose free of the thermostat housing.
Remove two bolts holding on the thermostat housing cover. Pull off the cover. Take note of the position of the old thermostat. Remove and install the new thermostat in exactly the same position.
Scrape off residue of the old thermostat gasket from the inside of the thermostat housing cover using a razor blade. Avoid getting any debris inside the thermostat housing.
Install the new gasket. Reattach the thermostat housing cover and radiator hose. Start your Jeep Cherokee and run the heater on high. Allow the engine to warm up. Check for leaks.

The thermostat controls the temp of the engine. The temp sensor tells the gauge what temp to display. If the heater is still putting out a lot of heat then it may be a false reading temp gauge. If however the temp is noticibly cooler then replace the thermostat. A stuck open thermostat would also cause the engine to warm up slowly. check for a loose/dirty connection at the plug on the temp sensor.
The best way to test it is to remove the thermostat, and then boil some water in a pot, drop the thermostat into the water and watch how well the thermostat responds. It should open up to the full open position very quickly and if it is slow or lagging to open up, or it does not open fully then replace the thermostat.
The valve would be connected in line in the heater hose going to the firewall often it will have a lever attached to it with a cable, can also be vacuum operated, look for a vacuum hose, if it has one. Most likely the heater core is plugged.
sounds like you have a big air pocket in the cooling system that you need to bleed. could also be the thermostat is stuck open & not allowing the engine to build up heat. get a temple stick & mark the thermostat housing & see if the mark dissapears after the engine runs for a few minutes.
There's a thermostatic switch that kicks the fan on and off. It is apparently shorted, causing the fan to run continuously. Check with your local auto parts store -- you be able to replace the switch without having to replace the entire fan assembly. In the meantime, pulling the fuse is a lot better than disconnecting the battery. You won't lose computer memory, clock, stereo memory, etc.
...You need to make sure you have the correct thermostat! Usually, there are 160, 180, and 195 degree therms for this jeep. 195 degree therm should be used no matter what the season. If you have a lower temp therm., you will not get good heat (or any at all) in cold weather. Also, You should flush and fill your cooling system to get any contaminants and/or debris out. Check the heater core...it may be **** at this point!
I do not know a link to a diagram, but I can certainly tell you how to find the thermostat! Looking at the front of the engine, there is a large water hose at the top of the motor that goes to the left, and attaches to the radiator. Not the radiator end, but the other end attaches to the thermostat cover. It has 2 bolts to take out and the little thing between that, and the motor about 2" around that kind of looks like a spinning top, is the thermostat. It is easy to change. Make sure you get ALL the old gasket off and that both bolts go through the new one, and you should be in business!
