It sounds like a starter to me, the starter does funny things, it will get to the point when even jumping it like you did wont work anymore, there is a dead spot in it, even jumping the van will make it start sometimes, this is a bad starter,Make sure your battery connections are clean and tight and connections on the starter are the same clean and tight and if so then replace the starter.i have had them removed and tested and the would run and test good but were bad, good day.
It could be a bad Starter Solenoid or Starter, or even a weak Alternator that is not fully charging the Battery when the engine is running. Make sure all connections to the Battery and Starter are tight and there is no corrosion present. Make sure the battery is fully charged and if your car is running your Alternator is at least showing 13 to 14 volts on a Volt Meter, or your Instrument Panel Gauge. Check that your Alternator Belt is tight too.
That sounds like a dead battery. The ticking sound is the relay (a type of switch) which enables power to the starter motor when you turn the key.
If the battery is weak, the relay will click, but there is not enough power to turn the starter motor.
I believe your vehicle uses a starter relay as opposed to a solenoid. The posting says 93 but the heading says 98 but you should be dealing with a starter relay. Also if you have an oil leak that can lead to starter failure on these vehicles. The starter relay is on the passenger side fenderwell near the shock tower.
the click is caused by the contacts in the starter solenoid being burned and erroded, your truck has a Japanese starter and this is the problem they have most often, and always the give away is the click. U can replace the contacts or the starter solenoid.
You can remove it and have it tested at autozone under load. it sounds like the armature on the starter is heating up and shorting to ground. I am not sure if there is a starting relay in he control box. look in your manual for this
the problem could be the starter, battery, battery cables, or alternator. the clicking could most likely be the starter going bad if not bad already or the battery weak or bad battery cables, if you have good power to everything else radio headlamps and heater the i would start by replacing starterlet me know what you find.
