If steering wheel is left full turn to one side, it puts pressure on the key. When you try to start, hold full pressure on the steering wheel to the left or right to relieve pressure on the key. Then the key should turn.
Hope this helps.

Usually a sign the tumblers in the lock cylinder have worn out or jammed.
You may have to get the lock cylinder drilled out and replaced.

You might try moving the steering wheel back and forth to make sure it is not putting extra pressure on the lock.

SOURCE: I put the ignition key

Since today's cars have an electric solenoid the prevents accidental shifter selection, you may want to make sure that you have at least enough voltage at your battery and at the same time of engagement apply the brake pedal in order to shift back to park position.

If your battery is too weak, it may require you to get a battery jump from another person.

Hi Bob, it sounds like the selector linkage has slipped out of position, in P or N it should not move at all, chock the wheels and be sure to apply the parking brake firmly before adjusting the linkages

Why can't I get the key in my jeep ignition to turn to lock and come out of the ignition?

It may be a malfunction in the gear selector safety switch with it saying 'hey, I am still in gear and you can't do that until I am in Neutral or Park.'

Try cycling the gear selector a few times.

I have a 98 Chevy Malibu Ls and the ignition won't

Inspect the old ignition cycle which is out.Is there any problem noticed of Ignition cylinder getting worn out.
Because when issue of ignition not turning off,its faulty ignition lock cylinder or faulty ignition switch.I suggest re-inspect the new ignition cylinder.

I put key in ignition and turn. Nothing happens. It is as if the car is in gear

It could be a number of things. Your battery might be disconnected or dead, your ignition could have gone out, if your car isn't in park sometimes it will do that as well. Check these things first, if you can't see anything wrong, consult a mechanic.

Can't get ignition key to turn.

1.) make sure the gear lever is completely in the P setting by just tapping the gear selector lever towards the front of the car

2.) If that fails inspect your ignition switch, I have had to replace mine twice on my 1993 Skylark

1996 ford taurus ignition switch does not work no resistance when turning the key in the on or off position.

It sounds as if the rod or ignition key gear may be broken. The ignition switch is actually on top of the steering colume under the dash. The key turns a gear that is connected to a rod. The rod travels down to the actual electrical ignition switch. If you are not feeling any tension at all when you turn the key, either the rod or gear has broken. In either case the steering wheel all the way down to the key tumblers will need to taken apart. Hope this helps.
