My 98 Olds Silhouette van shows to be overheating, and the 2 radiator fans aren't coming on. Help!

Temp guage comes to red within a mile of driving, 2 fans not coming on. Ran jumper wires from battery to wires leading to drivers side fan, and got it to spin. Don't know how to check passenger side fan. Fuses seem to be okay.

The first thing I would check is the fuse associated with these fans. If that is ok then I would suspect the temperature sensor that controls the fans.

SOURCE: passenger side radiator cooling fan stopped working

I found that for some reason if you start your car and then remove and reinstall the hi and low relays that the fans work. I have done this numerous times on my 1995 lhs. I thought that my fans were defective until by chance checked the relays which engine was running.

An overheating issue can be caused by a few different things, the most common cause of overheating is a sticking thermostat..it is a $7 part that is very easy to replace, it needs to be eliminated from the mix. Second most common would be a faulty water pump, this is usually characterised by a leak at the pump itself. If you are loosing coolant, you need to make sure it is not getting into your oil, you can check the dipstick for bubbles or a milky looking sludge. This can be caused by a cracked head or blown head gasket, these conditions are usually caused by the overheating itself, so if this is not the case, be careful and do not let it get too hot! The other thing that can cause an overheating issue would be a clogged radiator. The fan issue is problably not causing your problem, because at 35 miles per hour, enough air is being forced thru the radiator to effect cooling. The fans are good for when your car is sitting still. The electric fans are controlled by a coolant temp sensor. Good Luck! I hope you find this to be very helpful!

There is no machine for this,however a VERY skilled auto electric shop might be able to help.They really have to have a Gift with car wiring to fix your problem,it can be FIXED,find the right shop in your area.I will try and think this through to help you,this is what I used to do,It's not a book problem it is experience that will fix your car. I do have a question? How does your car run without the AC on?

DTC P0480 - COOLING FAN CIRCUIT

Circuit Description

The cooling fan is controlled by PCM through the fan relay based on inputs from ECT sensor, IAT sensor, A/C selector switch, A/C refrigerant pressure switch and vehicle speed sensor. PCM controls cooling fan by grounding cooling fan control circuit which turns on cooling fan relay.

The fan relay will be commanded on when ECT reaches 223°F (106°C) or greater, A/C is requested or vehicle speed is less than 38 MPH. Cooling fan relay will also be commanded on regardless of vehicle speed when a DTC is set requesting cooling fan to be on, ECT is 304°F (151°C) or greater, or A/C refrigerant pressure is high. Cooling fan may also be commanded on when engine is not running, on certain conditions.

Conditions for setting DTC:

Battery voltage greater than 9.5 volts.

Cooling fan fault line detects a malfunction for 6 seconds.

1. Check the cooling system. Ensure coolant level and belt tension are correct. Adjust/repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If no adjustment or repairs were required, go to next step.

2. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using scan tool, check if cooling fan is operating with ECT at less than 209°F (98°C). If cooling fan is off, go to next step. If cooling fan is on, go to step 4).

3. Command cooling fan relay on. If cooling fan operates, go to step 23). If cooling fan does not operate, go to step 5).

4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connector. If cooling fan turns off, go to step 23). If cooling fan does not turn off, go to step 6).

5. Disconnect cooling fan relay harness connector. Using a test light connected to ground, probe battery feed circuits in relay harness connector. If test light illuminates on both terminals, go to step 7). If test light does not illuminate on both terminals, go to step .

6. Disconnect cooling fan relay harness connector. With test light connected to ground, probe battery feed circuit in relay harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to step 9). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 10).

7. Connect a jumper wire between cooling fan relay battery feed and cooling fan battery feed circuit. If cooling fan operates, go to step 11). If cooling fan does not operate, go to step 12).

8. Repair open in battery feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

9. Repair short to voltage in cooling fan battery feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

10. Connect test light battery voltage and probe cooling fan control circuit. If test light illuminates, go to step 13). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 21).

11. Connect test light to battery voltage and probe cooling fan control circuit. Using scan tool, command cooling fan on. If test light illuminates, go to step 14). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 15).

12. With jumper wire still connected, disconnect cooling fan harness connector. Using test light connected to ground, probe cooling fan battery feed circuit. If test light illuminates, go to step 16). If test light does not illuminate, go to step 17).

13. Repair short to ground in cooling fan control circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

14. Check terminals to cooling fan relay. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If terminals are okay, go to step 21).

15. Check cooling fan control circuit for open or poor connection. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If circuit or connection is okay, go to step 22).

16. Connect test light to battery voltage and probe cooling fan ground circuit. If test light illuminates, go to step 1. If test light does not illuminate, go to step 19).

17. Repair open or poor connection in cooling fan ignition feed circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

18. Check for poor connections at cooling fan harness connector. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 23). If connections are okay, go to step 20).

19. Repair open or poor connection in cooling fan ground circuit. After repairs, go to step 23).

20. Replace cooling fan motor. After replacing cooling and motor, go step 23).

21. Replace cooling fan relay. After replacing relay, go to step 23).

22. Replace PCM. Program replacement PCM using required equipment. After replacing PCM, go to next step.

23. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Command cooling fan on. If cooling fan operates, system is okay. If cooling fan does not operate, repeat step 1).

In the black plastic box in the engine bay on the left or right side or against the firewall. The is top held down by plastic clips. Release them and look at the bottom of the top piece will be a diagram that will tell you where the cooling fan relay or relays are.

98 Olds van, how does the high/low cooling fan work?


I'm showing three fan relays in the wiring diagram.
The fans are powered by two 30amp maxi fuses. The relays and fan motors are grounded thru the engine computer. The computer takes input from the coolant sensor and the ac control to decide when fans are needed. You would need to know if the computer is grounding the relays, and if not, why not. You may need a scanner to monitor computer output.

Look at the hoses coming from the radiator, the bottom large hose connects to the water pump.

Radiator fan doesn't work


Always keep an eye on your engine temp gauge, find rad thermo switch and bridge connection (it's a switch anyway) this should bring on rad fan. Thermo switch usually on thermostat housing or radiator body housing !

I have a '98 Olds Silhouette cooling fans work when A/C is on but will not come on even when temp is above normal operating temp if A/C is off


Just saw your second posting, so the temp is still above normal. Could the sensor
that controls the fan be not reading the heat properly ? The antifreeze/coolant
issue could still be relevant, so I will re-post that info. Tho.
Electric cooling fans will sometimes come on after a vehicle is parked,
(It actually heats up when stopped), but not when it is rolling down the road
because the movement is applying some cooling effect to the engine.

If the engine is not actually overheating, then the fans may be working
normally. Also, make sure your water/antifreeze mix is correct by using a
specific gravity tester. It is a tube with 4 or 5 balls, some of which will float
to give you a reading. Contrary to popular belief, More is not better when it
comes to antifreeze/coolant. It needs water to work properly. Too strong a
mix will actually make your vehicle run cold so that the temp sensors and
heater will not function properly. The engine will not achieve proper operating
temperature and may actually damage some of the components by running
it cold, affect timing, spark, etc. This could also cause the symptoms you
describe. The engine would not actually reach the proper heat threshold
until you added the extra demand of the AC heat transfer. But the first criteria
would be whether the engine is actually overheating / or in normal range .
It may be that the colder weather is allowing the sensors to come on a little
later, warming the engine and heater components a bit more than they would
in warmer weather. Would be good to know what the actual coolant temp is.
Could check that with a guage, and also check to see what temp thermostat
you are using. 195 degrees in the winter would be better, 165/180 or so in the
warmer months

My 2002 Olds minivan is overheating. I changed thermostat and flushed radiator, bled the air from the air valves and changed the temp sending unit. It does not leak fluid and waterpump and belt are on...


My 02 silhouette just started having the same problem and I was told it was the head gasket. I was told mini vans with the 3.4 engine have this problem after a certain amount of miles. My brother has had this happen in 2 different vans with same engine. Hope this helps.

Overheating after 5 miles of driving. Fan not running


If she paid someone to replace her radiator she should take it back. There are temperature relays around the fan I believe and the fans are not working. These are right in the area of the radiator. Someone must have disconnected the fan or the relays were failing before the radiator was working. Either way, the car is not cooling and she sought a solution to that problem. She was charged and the problem is worse. Go back to the radiator place.

Chevy Venture Overheating


Almost sounds like the same symptons as my van. Turns out the guage was not the problem. The van was in fact running hot because the electric radiator fans were not kicking in when the engine was hot. I replaced the relay switches for the fans. There are two of these in the fuse panel under the hood. There has been no problem with overheating since
