Ran out of gas then filled tank half full now car will not stay running
Change fuel filter, probly suck all the garbage out of the tank, now filter is clogged, did I say clogged !!!!! anyway replace your fuel filter.

same thing happens with my malibu, except it works its way back up to full accurately. when its back up to full i know im almost empty. kinda weird but i got used to it.

I had this happen with my Honda Accord... So we sold it dirt cheap to a neighbor. They were nice enough to stop by one day and say it was nothing big. "A leak in the fuel line" It did exactly what you are describing! Would start fine drive a little ways, then clunk like it was out of gas. Sometimes might even try to start again.. usually after 30mins- 2 hrs would do the same thing. Crazy!!

SOURCE: filling gas tank
There is a vent pipe that runs along the fill pipe, they get kinked and cause this concern (tank can't vent air when filling), the only fix is to replace the fill pipe assembly.
