My 1968 chevy impala wont start unless i push gas pedal to the floor

My 68 Impala will not start unless i push the gas pedal to the floor and then will not stay running unless i keep pressure on the gas pedal. I changed my plug wires, distributor cap(HEI), and coil pack. Maybe my fuel pump or accelerator pump is bad? Any help is appreciated.

It is your carburetor the fuel float is set to high and probably leaks. If it older than 10yrs old and has never been rebuilt . do that if you want to save yourself a bunch of time and little more money make the investment of a Brand New not rebuilt. if you get the carb manufactor specs matched to your motor , Out of the box, it will be very close to being on the money .

Okay, Ill check floats. I was thinking fuel pump because this was an all of a sudden problem. She ran fine for me 2 days ago and then yesterday this started happening. The carb i got is an edelbrock 1406 on a chevy 350 with an edelbrock intake as well.

if the fuel pump is mechanical if it were to go bad it will stop pumping not pump more. The carb set up you have is a good one and is normally very reliable but all it takes is just a spec of dirt to get into and change the whole thing.Clean it real good and hopefully tha will do the trick, Good luck

SOURCE: won't start unless you push

it sounds like fuel pump is going. pressure should be around 40 psi.
Or it could be flooding. Holding gas pedal to floor during cranking of the engine, shuts off fuel flow through the injectors to clear a flooded engine. After engine is running again, it lets fuel flow.

If you have a Mass Air Flow Sensor in the iar intake tube, clean it with spray carb cleaner several times.

Also, try disconnecting the oxygen sensor to see if it helps. It will turn your check engine light on, but you can cycle key from off to "on" 40 times to turn it off.

Could be the catalytic converter. It would explain the check engine light and poor performance.

Son cleaned throttle body on my 2001 chevy impala and changed the air filter, now it won't start.....what can be wrong?

Did he clean the throttle body while it was on the vehicle? It is probably flooded out now, Turn the key on like you are going to start it then hold the gas pedal to the floor. This process is the clear flood mode and disables the injectors from spraying any additional fuel.Give this a try and see if it will start for you. If not may need to remove the sparkplugs to dry them off.

The break safty switch could be mixed up with the break safty switch. If the car will start without you steping on the break, the wires are mixed up in the harness or the car was put together with the break safty switch on the gas insted of the break.
