Question about 1998 Subaru Forester

Monster fuel leak

My 1998 forester AWD has developed a bad fuel leak from somwhere at the top of the tank /fuel line. It's not clear from the access panels behind the seat. My local garage have told me they'll need to drop down the tank to investigate but that'll certainly mean a new tank and therefore sender +++ all of which comes to more than the car's worth. Prior to ditching an otherwise great car and going back to landrovers ( cheap bits and fixed with a hammer ) I thought I should try removing the tank, flushing it and doing a load of welding/fabrication myself. Can anyone advise on the proceedure for removing the tank/ diagnosing the leak? Thanks Lev

If the gas is leaking from the top of the tank, 10 to 1 it's either the fuel line, or the top part of the sending unit which is probably made of plastic, is cracked where the fuel line connects to.The tank should be empty or near it, easier to drop, loosen the tank strap bolts towards the front, then remove the rear ones one at a time, as you take the last rear bolt out, the tank should drop a little. Becarful of the wire connection and fuel line, drop it slowly enough to reach in and disconnect them.If the unit has a plastic hose connection, it needs replacing. good luck.

Can you replace rear metal fuel line with a rubber fuel line on a 1995 buick centry v6

I had a Chev Corsica with V6. The fuel lines that ran straight fore and aft to/from fuel tank were metal. But where comes out of tank it was rubber. I'm assuming you've developed a pinhole leak in one of the metal fuel lines. I would suggest putting a "sleeve" of neoprene fuel line over the leak and clamp in place. This requires cutting the neoprene hose lengthwise so that you can slip it over the bad spot. Jut keep in mind that these fuel lines are under a bit of pressure.

Smelling fuel fumes inside cab

Possible fuel line leaking or check around the area of the carb for leaks. Check all line connections Check gas tank all over. I doesn't need much of a leak to smell. Some times leaks develope at the tank top where the fuel pump is located as well. Please don't use a match for light to check this out

The gas tank leaks on a 1998 Subaru Forester

You most likely & unfortunately will have to remove the fuel tank
to find a rusted steel fuel tubing or rubber hose that leaks

Removal just to get acess to the area that leaks

I doubt the tank leaks & if it does you buy a new one
from a dealer,so save your money

It could be just an "o"-ring that seals the fuel pump

I have a fuel leak somwhere near the gas tank. There is fuel which leaked on to the rear axle but I can not find the source.

IT MIGHT HAVE COME FROM THE FILLER TUBE TO THE GAS TANK! OR POSSIBLY ONE OF THE FUEL LINES ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF THE TANK! ON A NEWER CAR, YOU CAN ACCESS THE FUEL PUMP INLET FROM UNDER THE BACK SEAT! DEFINATELY CHECK THIS OUT, AS IT CAN CAUSE A FIRE, AND YOU COULD GET HURT!

Fuel is leaking or being forced out of the tank had a recent fuel pump replaced is it possible to have a leak after such a procedure

yes very very possible the fuel lines probably are very rusty and/or brittle and when disturbed to replace pump can develop a leak also any connections where the lines hook to tank can leak or could be top seal on tank where pump goes into tank(top seal usually only leak on a full or near full tank)

AWD went out in my 1998 Subaru Forester?

This recently happened to my 98 Subaru Legacy Outback.
My problem is in the rear differential. May be the same for you.
When making a turn, the car sounds like a Star Wars T.I.E. Fighter. The outside wheel is not turning fast enough to keep up with the inside wheel or vice versa. AWD is disengaged and car is currently operating on Front WD. I was told this is fine to drive this way.

I have developed a leak on the inlet hose of my 97

Yes, you'll at least need to lower the gas tank to get the line disconnected from the pump fitting on top of the tank.

2000 ford windstar gas smell on the inside only no gas leaks already changed the fuel filter the pcv valve is fine as well .where is the smell coming from? and why is it only on the inside and u can't...

Check and see if you have any gas on the ground after you park your car. Check around the gas tank and gas cap. It's possible that the fuel pump (which is in the gas tank) has hoses that may be leaking. If this is a slight leak, it might only manifest itself via a gas odor into the trunk or passenger compartment. It might be a good idea to put the car on a hoist and follow the fuel lines from the engine to the fuel tank. There should a one line that takes the fuel from the fuel tank to the engine and another that brings back the excess. There should also be another line coming out of the fuel tank that is for venting. Unfortunately, the fuel pump and hose connections are not easily accessible and require either removing the gas tank or cutting a hole in the trunk to access it. You should definitely take care of this soon as leaks don't get better, only worse and it is a potential fire hazard. Good luck!
