2000 Sunfire won't shift into gear when it is cold outside-

I have to let the car run for 30 minutes when it is really cold out to be able to shift into gear. What could be the problem.

I have a 97 Sunfire that is doing the same thing. I wuld leave for work, and my daughter would call saying it wouldn't go inter gear. I would show up, and if would work fine. I have been starting the car each day before I leave and it has worked fine (temps have been above freezing). Today, it is 17 degrees out, and I had the same problem. It's like the gear shift is just "frozen".

Im guessing your both talking about the auto tranny? if so try doing a tranny flush and replaceing the fluid... if your both living in the midwest as well as myself im sure that would help.

If the clutch is good and no air in the hydrolic system, your synchronizers are most likely going bad.

Today I checked and added some tranny fluid to my 98 pontiac sunfire and now im having trouble shifting when i didn't before i checked it. what could be the problem?

as long as you didn't overfill the transmission, it shouldn't be giving you any shifting problems, unless , for some strange reason , there is a air blockage, and this is unusal, "next start the car up, and then let it run , while you pull out the transmission dip stick, and let it run for a very short time, while you go through the gears with the gear selector , then replace the dipstick, and re check the fluid level again, and then drive the car, and then see how it is shifting. also, make sure that the transmission fluid that you put in the car was the right kind for your car, " it should be dexron transmission fluid.

It's 12 degrees outside, how long should i leave the engine of my 2007 ford focus running to warm up?

Wait for the temp gauge to lift off of the low end stop. The car is then warm enough to drive. Be very gentle on the trans for the first 20 miles or so, because the transmission relies on engine heat to warm up the trans fluid. Cold trans fluid is very dense and can cause the transmission to slip, causing gear damage.

2000 pontiac sunfire 2.4L twin cam. When put in drive I hear a loud bang and when driving it has a quieter bang when it shifts gears.

Check your motor mounts, it sound like your motor is rocking back and forth. You can confirm this by watching the engine while someone shifts it in and out of gear for you.

u need to have the system tested for trouble codes, but u most likely have a defective trans 1-2 shift solenoid. to replace this u will need to pull the trans pan off the solenoids are attached to the valve body, also check the trans connector for water or corrosion.

First thing to do is check the fluid level if that ok you may want to think about having the transmission filter and fluid changed, there are other possibilities but check these first
