If you are talking about a car or truck (which you did not tell me), the brake drum slides off, but with some difficulty because of rust. You will need to use a heavy mallet to tap around the drum to loosten it before it will come off.

Rear brake shoe replacement on a 98 chevy 3500 dually

If you have drums on the rer yes you do have to remove the axle its simple though you unbolt the 6-8 bolts on the end of the axle then it just simply slides out thats it there mite be some resistance but there isnt anything else holding it in. and you dont have to worry about putting it back into the same spot eather just slide it back in and line up the drum.

Rear axle 02 escalade need to remove to replace dust shield

-chalk the wheels so the vehicle can not roll.
-Place the transmission in nuetral.
-jack up the rear of the vehicle.
-remove the real wheels-
-remove the drums or calipers and rotors.
-remove the rear diff fill plug on the side of the differential.
-remove the center cover on the rear differential. Have a drain pan under it to catch the lube that will come out.
-rotate the drive shaft until the rear diff pin bolt is accessible and remove the bolt.
-remove the rear diff pin
-push the axles in
-remove the c clips from the axles
-pull the axles out
-replace the backing plate/dust shield.

They do make a two piece backing plate that can be installed without removing the axles. You will unbolt the old backing plate then cut it into two pieces to remove. The new two piece backing plate will slide over the axle and then bolt into place. I know for sure NAPA has them.

My problem is when I put the new brakes on my Atv I can't get the drum back on, it looks like this ring is stoping the drum from slidding back on??? Do I have to remove the round c spring??

Have u re-adjusted it to reduce it enough to slide drums back in. U could do this first, slide drums back in then re-adjust to expand linings to required width. Had this problem once, brake lining was the same size and all but a slight difference on d lining metal kept touching the drum even after lining was filed down to enable the drum slide back in. Examine the brake carefully to be sure it is the right type. Unless the wheel cylinder s bad. The right brake should give the drums no trouble sliding back in.

Cant adjust back brakes to get drum back on

the adjuster wheel has to make the brake shoe 'spreader' shorter-yo9u need to rotate the adjuster wheel so the brake shoes are closer together to get the drum back on-ideally, adjust it so that there is slight pressure when you slide the drum on.

Unbolt the caliper if you have one & the caliper mount,
same as you would on the front,if you were working
on your brakes

If you have a brake drum unbolt the backing plate

e.g. just take it all apart & pull the axle

you have to remove the dustcover in the center of the drum and take the nut off then slide the rear drum off

u have to unbolt the caliper[ 2 bolts ] than remove caliper remove pads slide in new ones compress caliper piston replace and bolt back on

Can't remove rear brake drums

tap...not the wheel studs,the side face of the drum with 4 lb dead blow mallet which will release the drum from the hub. it takes 3 or 4 strikes to separate the two when its stuck to the hub ,once free it will slide right off.Heat,from a torch applied to to the cast iron drum around the stuck hub will work as well.

Rear Axel Seal Leaking, How do I pull the axel to repair?

You will need to remove the differential rear cover,drain fluid, remove wheel, brake drum, (rotor) . Unbolt center diff. pin, carefully remove (don't loose shims) push axle in remove lock keeper, then slide out axle, replace seal, put some grease on it, slide axle in reverse all to install.

Ford f350 drum brake

Don't listen to the last guy. The drum does not just slide off. You have to remove the axle by removing the eight 5/8" bolts and pulling it out. Inside the hub you will find a ratcheting lock nut. Visible will be 4 slots where a special socket fits. You can buy the socket from a parts store or you can just use a 1/4" punch and slowly hammer to slowly thread the nut off. Drivers side is left hand thread while the passenger side is right hand thread. Remove the nut and the outer bearing will fall out (so catch it before it hits the dirt). Then slide the drum off. While you inside there it is a good idea to replace the axle seal. It's about $30 and an easy change.
