SOURCE: WHERE IS THE SENSOR LOCATED?

This is a known problem. The temp sensors go bad every so often. VW recognized this a few years back, updated the sensor and accordingly changed the colour from brown to green. oops.... They still go bad. The sensor is on the drivers side of the engine, on the back of the head in what looks like the thermostat housing. If you have a man trans there's a set of glow plugs commin out of it. This is the only temp sensor on the TDI. There's a plastic horseshoe clip (the dealer should have offer you one when you bought the sensor) you have to pop out, then wiggle the sensor until it comes out. MAKE SURE THE OLD O-RING COMES OUT, this will make instaling the new sensor much easier and will prevent your all your coolant from leaking out.... Yah, I seen it done, not good. Worst part is you can't see what you are dooing so good but its fairly simple. Good luck and happy motoring

Vw beetle does not start. seems like its some kind of anti theft protection. the car/key icon lights up, it turns over for a second , then off. this is the first time this has happened, but we bought it...

First of all you need to programm all ignition keys using suitable diagnostic equipment (VAS, VAG-Com) connected to the data link connector of the car.

You have an electronic immobilizer key recognition problem. Now your key chip is not recognized by the transponder antenna fitted on the ignition switch barrel.

  • Everytime when you had a new key you must programm all available ignition car keys before trying to start the engine with this new key !!!

This warning lamp indicates that the engine is locked by the immobilizer system, and the engine start sequence must be repeat again.

From year 1995 in Audi-VW (VAG) cars is used engine immobilizer. The VAG group immobilizer system consists of an immobilizer ECU which controls the recognition of keys and the Engine Management ECU system. Immobilizer is activated when the ignition key is removed and, together with the engine control unit, largely prevents unauthorized starting of the engine. The system uses a transmitter and receiver unit in the ignition key (transponder). Whenever an attempt is made to start the engine, it transmits a new code to the car's electronics. The immobilizing is only cancelled and car motor electronic receives permission to start engine if the key sends a right authorization code.

The car wont start sometimes and sometimes it will. The engine doesn't even turn over but it's not a battery problem because we had that checked. What could it be?

    Dear Madam or Sir,

this is a well known problem with the immobilizer system.

See the following official tech bulletin :

    Affected vehicles:
All models with Bosch RB8 instrument panel up to 2002 MY.

    Problem:

Engine starts and cuts out immediately.

Trouble code stored: 17978 (P1570) - engine control module (ECM), immobilizer active.

Trouble code stored: 18058 (P1650) - CAN data bus, instrumentation - no signal.

    Cause
    Immobilizer fault.
System arms when ignition switched ON.

    Remedy:
Access fault memory. If trouble codes present fit modified instrument panel (incorporating immobilizer control module).

Note: Immobilizer can only be programmed using diagnostic equipment.

Code PO 238 on 2001 VW Beetle where do i start

The P0238 code relates to a Turbo Boost sensor pressure High. The P0106 is a MAP sensor code and could be caused by a bad or loose hose to the MAP sensor and can cause the P0171 which is system to lean code. The P0297 is a vehicle overspeed code. Hope this helps you some.
