Does the noise have any sort of metallic sound to it? I had a '97 CR-V and when I turned hard right or left it would slighty bind the exhaust sytem. Just enough over time to cause the spot welds on the heat shield over the resonator (the "muffler" behind the catalyst) to fail. When I'd turn sharp, the heat shield would lift slightly due to the failed welds and vibrate against the resonator. Took a bit of head scratching to find this one.

SOURCE: My AWD CRV has 250,000
there is no problem with this solution for the short term, but the transfer case is not going to last as long, make sure u service the transmfer case with new lube every 15,000 while you have the truck in front wheel drive only.

I always recommend it but if you had not been hearing any clicking noise as you turned the wheel on the side that did't break you shouldn't need to. The only reason I recommend it is the fact that they are most likely the same age and the other will be going soon. I hope this helps and good luck.
