Question about 1993 Toyota Pickup
While driving, the headlights dimmed, the speedometer died, and the engine began to buck. I turned off the heater fan and headlights - the bucking ceased. Eventually, I lost running lights and had to stop in a safe location. Would not restart immediately, but would after 20 minutes. The next morning, I was able to drive it 4 miles home - dashboard charging light on.
History - new head, alternator, battery two yrs ago. New super bright headlights last month. This is a part-time vehicle used once a week or so. I'm guessing its the voltage regulator, but I don't have a way to test it or the alternator for that matter. Background - PA state inspection mechanic '81-86, VA master electrician '92-present.
I'm looking for any suggestions, and does anyone have a suitable wiring diagram. Pool_Wizard@verizon.net
Hello! I too am PA St Insp Mechanic.
Here are some suggestions:
Note that the Fuel injection computer starts to cease to work properly at 10.5 VDC. This leads me to a voltage issue. You mentioning that the veh has bright headlamps may be consuming more power than the alt can deliver, with the heater, the lights and the other "normal" draws.
Test the alt output with a voltmeter, plus to plus, minus to minus, at the battery. You should read 14 + volts with all of the above mentioned accessories on, at idle. 11-12 volts = bad alternator, unless the belt is real slipping bad. 14.4 is the spec.
Also, the Voltage Regulator in inside the alternator.
Glad to provide assistance to you; please rate my help with a FixYa, I would be very grateful.
