SOURCE: smelling gas when just filled up tank on Ford Focus 2000

Now, in the past year, when I fill the gas tank, I can smell gas fumes inside the car (remember, it's a wagon).
I have a lot of customers that run into this problem and get the same answers from the dealers.
Given the age of the car and that it has been in a accident, here is what I would look for first.
1. First, because of the accident I would look to see if all the work was performed properly around the gas tank. Check the filler neck to make sure that all hoses and clamps are tight and in good shape, if cracked or it has any bad spots in it, replace it. The tech. that repaired the car could have missed something by accident; this is always a good place to start with by double-checking the work that was done.
2. I've had the Fuel Pump replaced twice due to recall. Another possibility, when they installed the fuel pump they may not have put the seal in right or it could have slipped. There is usually a rubber ring that goes between the tank and the pump and it might have moved during installation. When you fill the tank to the top it may come out because the seal slipped out of position.
3. I'm not sure on this model but on a lot of the newer cars they have been mounting the charcoal canister in the quarter panel next to the fuel neck but it may be hidden behind a plastic cover. The charcoal canister may have been damaged from the accident or it could just be defective and when you fill the tank up it may be going into the canister and fumes are coming from it or gas may be leaking out of it.
4. I have found that some of my customers have been over filling the tank trying to put as much as they can squeeze into the tank, this is not a good idea. When it gets hot outside, the gas expands and has no where to go except into the canister or lines of the canister, this system is not meant to handle gas, it is only meant to handle fumes. You will smell gas if you try to over fill the tank. When you fill it at the station you should let it click off. Just try rounding it off to the fifty cent mark, (example: $10.03 only go to $10.50 not $11.00) this will help you to keep from over filling the tank and neck of the tank. Over filling the tank can clause damage to the canister and components in this emission system.
These are things that the average person with some mechanical knowledge can check out on their own. After this point, it will usually have to be looked into by a fully qualified tech. with good trouble shooting skills that can follow the flowcharts to find the problem.

yep i seen it in happen .i was at a gas station a guy drove car to the gas station on empty.he fill his tank up .could not get it to crank .some cars you have to restart fuel pump when run out of gas. like chrysler.you use a scanner. but chervrolet you run low over heat damage the pump.it has to stay submerge gas to keep it cool. check fuel pump pressure.it should be 41 - 47 psi.

SOURCE: gas gauge reads empty but tank acts like it's full

I also have a 04 with a 1.8L. same problem. I took the fuel regulator off. It is a black box behind the rear tire under car. It only has 2 bolts to take off. After that there is a couple of vent hoses from the tank going to this box. Unplug them and 1 electrical connection. The electrical connection and one vent is connected to a T connection on the box that you can unplug by twisting on the T. Take that T off and look inside where you unplugged the hose on this T. There is a spring and a little plunger inside this tube. The plunger gets stuck. I took a little screw driver and some PB blaster and worked that plunger back and forth a couple dozen times and it unfroze. Put it back together gassed up just fine. I did not look but I was told regulator can be replaced for 200$. But a can of blaster is cheaper.

2000 Ford Excursion V10 gas. first, fuel gauge read zero on a full tank. drove 5 miles and stopped for 20 mins. would not restart. fuse OK replacedpump relay. inertia fuel shut off switch OK.

Not much point replacing the fuel pump until the supply and ground has been checked and found to be ok.
Gauge sender might share the same ground...

If the fuel gauge sender and fuel pump share the same space, replacing the pump provides the ideal opportunity to test the gauge unit with an analogue ohm meter.

Why will my gas gage stay at full on my 2001 excursion

The gauge is faulty or the sending unit in the fuel tank is bad ! There is away to test it, find a wiring diagram an locate the two wires at the fuel pump sending unit connector . Go to radio shack or some other electronics store an buy some resistors of differing resistance , I'm not sure of resistor sizes , I will look it up on my ford service info system. If you jump the right resisters into the fuel sending unit circuit you can make the gauge show 1/4 - 1/2 - 3/4 an full. If it move to those positions with the right size resistors it's not the gauge but the sending unit in the gas tank ! Diagnosis of Stuck Fuel Gauge Is it Gauge or Sending Unit

Where is the fuel pump located on a 2001 ford excursion 6.8 liter Triton V-10 ??? How hard is it to replace ???

The fuel pump is located inside the fuel tank. You need to lower the tank in order to get at it. It is mounted on the top and you need to lift it out of the tank. It is an assembly with the fuel level and everything with it. If you are at all mechanical it's really not that difficult providing the tank isn't full of gas. Also when removing the straps to drop the tank to try not to bend them up because that makes it a real bear when installing the tank back. Did you check the fuel cut off switch as well as any fuses that go to that circuit ? Wouldn't want you doing all that work for nothing. I hope this helps and good luck.

I HAD THE FUEL PUMP CHANGED AND NOW I AM HAVING OTHER PROBLEMS. I SMELL GAS, MY GAS GUAGE NO LONGER WORKS AND I AM GETTING POOR GAS MILEAGE. WHAT WENT WRONG?

The gauge no longer working is related to the pump, I would take it back to the shop can have then correct that.

Not sure what you mean by smelling gas, is it leaking on the ground or running rich?

If it is running richy, the fuel pressure needs to be checked, if it is too high it could cause it to run rich. Otherwise now that pressure is up with a new pump, older/leaking injectors could now be the issue not holding up under the full pressure.

One other thing you would try is reset the computer (disconnect battery for afew minutes) then drive at a steady speed for about 10 minutes.

Hope the helps.

2000 ford windstar gas smell on the inside only no gas leaks already changed the fuel filter the pcv valve is fine as well .where is the smell coming from? and why is it only on the inside and u can't...

Check and see if you have any gas on the ground after you park your car. Check around the gas tank and gas cap. It's possible that the fuel pump (which is in the gas tank) has hoses that may be leaking. If this is a slight leak, it might only manifest itself via a gas odor into the trunk or passenger compartment. It might be a good idea to put the car on a hoist and follow the fuel lines from the engine to the fuel tank. There should a one line that takes the fuel from the fuel tank to the engine and another that brings back the excess. There should also be another line coming out of the fuel tank that is for venting. Unfortunately, the fuel pump and hose connections are not easily accessible and require either removing the gas tank or cutting a hole in the trunk to access it. You should definitely take care of this soon as leaks don't get better, only worse and it is a potential fire hazard. Good luck!

I have a 2004 excursion diesel drove it all day stoped at a clients turned it off for 20 min came out and wont start the starter is going but its just not firing could it be a fuse I dont smell fuel but I...

Ok well the glow plugs on a diesel have nothing to do with the engine firing. All the glow plugs do is heat up the combusion chamber on cold starts. Diesel engines fire using high compression. An oxygen sensor won't cause the vehicle to not start and your diesel doesn't have one of those anyways. It could be a fuel related issue. (pump, line, pressure etc.) Have you it scanned for engine DTC's? But based on your knowledge of your diesel vehicle i'm going to suggest you take it to a shop.
