Question about 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Rear end troubleshooting for a 1999 suburban

I have a 99 suburban, and it was slipping and grinding in drive, in 2wd. In 4wd, it will only engage if I reverse first, than pull forward. With the trucks rearend jacked up in the air, the wheels turn freely, with the only noise seeming to come from the brake drums. Also, when it was in the air, the drive shaft doesn't turn, but when the truck is on the ground, it will roll as if it is in neutral. I haven't opened the differential yet, so I haven't ruled that out, but am wondering if it might have something to do with the transfer case, as it seems to **** when I accelerate from a stop, rather than take off smoothly.

maby im wrong but if you rev up and only rear wheels spin that means that it might be 4 wheel drive but not constant 4 wheel drive or diff lock system ,,,, ,, in 4 wheel drive all wheells will turn together but if pressure of slip is bad enough or torque high enough only 2 wheels will drive ,,, thats why diff lock locks wheels together in each axle to over come this ,,, all wheel drive like in landrover locks all 4 wheels together to ensure all wheels rotate to give best grip

Could be bad or sticking hubs, wheel bearings or u joints. When you said it went away when 4wd engages tells me that your right its partially engaged. Had the same issue with my 95 SUV 2yrs ago and had to replace the locking hub assembly. It had the electronic auto hubs. They were shot and starting to fall apart.

99 Grand Cherokee. Started with locking or binding with loud clunks. After long drive, rear diff was smoking and was replaced. Just drove it and after shifting into all time 4wd and then back to 2wd did it...


Sounds like a bad transfer case. Generally what you experienced is caused by a tire mis-match but can also happen by itself sometimes. GC's use a fluid coupler that is supposed to engage 4wd when tires begin to slip. (coupler is pretty much the same as the mechanical clutch unit on your fan, only larger) If the coupler fails, symptoms like yours happen.

It very well could be in your transfer case, I would take it to a dealer and let them check it it is not something you want to tackle if you dont know a lot about them.

Check 4 wheel drive light appears after 4x4 is engaged.


the sensors inside the t-case show that no lubricant is present and just needs a cycle of use to read correctly, or a new tranfer case switch $60 and 30min.

I had this with a C3500 4x4 it was the wiring contection at the transmission please test all these problems as ths may be a cheap fix.
