SOURCE: head bolt torque spec

Always use new head bolts.
1)tighten to 40ft/lbs
2)back off 1/2 turn
3)tighten back to 40ft/lbs
4)tighten an additional 90 degrees
5)tighten an additional 90 degrees.

STEP # 3 ADDITIONAL 90deg

AFTER STEP # 1 LOOSEN BOLTS 1/2 TURN, THEN DO ALL 3 STEPS.

MAKE SURE YOU TIGHTEN IN SEQUENCE.

You need to buy the manual, because you also need to know the order in which to torque them.

usually you start at the middle and circle outward.
But they can differ. Some cars you always need to put in new head bolts. Others are done in several stages. This is too critical to take chances on.
If you really can't afford $19 for a manual, go to the library and xerox the pages.

Moly and other lubes offer reduced friction and increased bolt tension, which will affect the torque figure. I nee the head bolt torque specs for a 95 sable


    • Tighten retaining bolts in sequence to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).
    • Then back off bolts 360°.
CAUTION: Always use new cylinder head bolts when installing cylinder head or damage to engine may occur.
  1. Tighten the cylinder head retaining bolts in two final tightening steps in sequence shown in the following illustration:
    • 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.)
    • 92 Nm (68 ft. lbs.)
