  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the downshift linkage rod return spring at the low-reverse servo cover.
  4. Coat the outer lever attaching nut with penetrating oil. Remove the nut and lever.
  5. Remove the 2 switch attaching bolts, disconnect the wiring at the connectors and remove the switch.
  6. Installation is the reverse of removal. Adjust the switch and tighten the bolts to 55-75 inch lbs. (6.2-8.5 Nm).

Removing the Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor

As of 1994, the neutral safety switch is referred to as a Manual Lever Position Sensor (MLP).
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Disengage the harness connector from the MLP sensor.
  4. Remove the 2 sensor attaching bolts and remove the sensor.
To install:
  1. Install the MLP sensor and install retaining bolts. Do not tighten, the sensor requires adjustment.
  2. Adjust the MLP sensor then tighten attaching screws to 80-100 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  3. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.

ADJUSTMENT

C6 Transmission
  1. Hold the steering column transmission selector lever against the Neutral stop.
  2. Move the sliding block assembly on the neutral switch to the Neutral position and insert a 0.091 in. (2.3mm) gauge pin in the alignment hole on the terminal side of the switch.
  3. Move the switch assembly housing so that the sliding block contacts the actuating pin lever. Secure the switch to the outer tube of the steering column and remove the gauge pin.
  4. Check the operation of the switch. The engine should only start in Neutral and Park .

Adjusting the MLP sensor

Park is the last detent when the manual control lever is full forward. Return 2 detents toward the output shaft for Neutral.
  1. Position the manual control lever in Neutral .
  2. Insert Gear Position Sensor Adjuster tool T93P-700 10-A or equivalent, into the slots.
  3. Align all 3 slots on the MLP sensor with 3 tabs on the tool.
  4. Tighten the attaching screws to 80-100 inch lbs. (9-11 Nm).

I hope help you. Good luck (rated this help).

How do I bypass the neutral safety switch on a 1998 jeep cherokee?

no transmission even stated, so can not answer. this.

mine has 6 speed stick 2008, what do you have.?

my guess is the car has automatic,

and that it has a PRNDL switch on the side of said a/T

and that one segment is failing , NOT STATED WHICH.

and you want to DO not want to fix it correctly and want to bypass it.

bypassing the N/P is illegal. (car starting in gear is illegal in USA< but that "country" too, not stated)

and bypassing the R, causes the reverse lamps to glow full time

that too is illegal. in all countries... and horror to other drivers.

i must presume the engine wont crank, forget to stay that minor issue?

my buddy has an old jeep, that is only used to pull STUMPS.

it is never driven on the road

so i put a push button on the dash, with wire to IGN1, feed

and the other to the starter solenoid (dinky wire)

its UNSAFE AT ANY SPEED, LOL.

you can too, but ill not say how, nor show pictures.

I need to bypass my igition switch

The problem you are experiencing is the security anti theft system. It will literally shut off you starter or injectors to prevent theft (or when it fails, like in your situation) You can bypass this feature and leave your existing ignition as is.

Hi i have a 1998 ford escort zetec i have power all over the car but not to the starter or at least it doesnt turn when i turn it on

Your most likely problem is your neutral safety switch. This can be a bad switch or worn linkage. You can jumper the starter from the hot cable to the starting lug if the starter turns then that pretty much comfirms it's the nuetral safety switch.
If your problem with the nuetral safety switch is caused by the linkage you may be able to adjust the linkage. If there is an adjustment for your car it should be on the steering column under the hood or at the linkage pivit point on the frame below the steering column.

1994 Ford Escort, will not start. i have replaced the starter, starter relay, and battery. the car still will not start. please help.

hi,
set the parking brake and make sure its in neutral then
try to bypass the ignition switch by jumping the starter relay under the hood. take the small wire off the relay and use a 2 foot piece of wire to go from the positive battery terminal to the terminal on the starter relay you just unplugged. if it turns over and if its a manual transmission the clutch pedal interlock switch may be busted, on the clutch pedal theres a small switch that senses the pedal is to the floor and it wont start. you can try to bypass that with a simple jumper wire. lastly if neither of those do it then you may have to drop the steering column and put a new ignition switch in it.
