Question about 1988 Volkswagen Golf

2 Answers

I have this problem on my 88 mk2 vw golf, when you come to a stoplight the car starts to shake a little, but once you get on the gas it disappears, other than that she gets up and goes.

Hello, I would like help diagnosing this problem with a car I might buy. Its for sale under $1000 and supposedly all it needs is motor mounts, but what else could these symptoms mean besides just motor mounts. Motor mounts should not want to make the car stall alone, shake true, but not stall.

Motor mounts sounds like it may be your problem. The motor will shake and stuff, and if they are bad bad, it may break more.. But yes,in order for a motor to work properly, it needs to be mounted tight for all of the moving parts. It can sound like it's stalling. Other than that, I'd suggest a bunch of other things Throttle positioning sensor for one. , sticky EGR, fuel filters, AIC Air idle control. I would say wait and see after mount is fixed, but if you price these things, you may find them cheaper than you may think. Good luck let me know how you make out. Cheers from Nova Scotia

It sounds like the hydraulic lifters are bleeding down after sitting for a while... there are ball checks which are supposed to prevent this... Try using a good engine flush (a product that frees sticky lifters) and replace the oil with a good synthetic... Hope this helps...;-)

Ignition system sounds probable on vhicle when everything gets warmed up. High pitched hum could be bad tire or worse bearing.

SOURCE: golf sometimes no power to starter motor

I would check the ignition switch. You can unplug the small wire at the starter, with a test light check and see if power is at the plug when you turn the key to the start postion. If there is power there, you may have a bad starter solenoid. I've had to replace a few on my VW, (86 Scirocco, 91 Jetta GLI)

How do I replace motor mounts on a 1989 Honda Accord LXi 2dr? Am I suppose to support the engine with a jack by the oil pan and if so, should I put a piece of wood between the jack and the oil pan to not...

You got it
Wood under oil pan
May need a long pry bar also
Just don't pry on any aluminium items, trans case
& such.
Do all motor & trans axle mounts & be done with
not having to come back there ever again
Support the car with jack stands & be careful when
raising the engine some, that the sub frame stays
on the jack stands & only the motor moves just
enough to get the mounts out.

I have a 2002 vw gti golf with a 1.8T engine. We had it stall out on us at a stoplight so we took it in and they replaced the vacuum lines and said the problem was fixed. It's not it continues to stall...

simple test
start the engine and let idle
if idles ok , then put you foot on the brake
if it stalls ---replace the faulty brake booster
as with all faults in a cars
have the fault codes read first to avoid unnecessary waste of time and cash

Windshild wipers stuck.

check the wiper motor ground wire that is supposed to be attached to one of the wiper mount bolts ( the motor is sound insulated from the body by rubber washers so the motor needs a ground wire to one of the bolts to complete its circuit), On my vehicle this had broken at the washer/compression connector that slips under the mount nut. The wire is very short so you may need to extend it with a short piece of additional wire. The battery ground strap is nearby, and it is easiest to put the extended wire under the nut for that.

If there is no blown fuse problem, this is a good candidate for the issue: no ground means no circuit means no wiper movement.
