Check that you are using the correct reach plug as it sounds like the plug is hitting the piston. PLugs come in various thread lengths and too long will cause problems with either hitting the piston or fouling the exposed thread which means you will strip the tfread out of the head when you replace the plug or too short means the thread will fowl in the head giving you the same grief when you try to fit the correct plug The correct plug thread length will be the same as the thread length in the head.
