Question about 1999 Toyota 4Runner

1 Answer

Engine wont start sometimes

If it doesn't start I get one click per turn of the key. If it does start its usually after about a minute and seems random. I am able to get radio power, and everything else lights up. No other issues that I noticed.

Probably the starter.
You would check for voltage at the starter with the key in the crank position. There is a neutral safety switch in that circuit that could fail, but it usually does not come and go. And you could crank it in neutral most times it the switch failed in park.

I toko the battery to Batterie Plus to have it tested, and it appeared the battery was fine. I put in a new starter and it starts right up every time! Thanks again.

Not sure of the year of your Tahoe but I can tell you the standard procedure to program your key for say like a 1999. First make sure your battery has a full charge. Next if you have any security related trouble codes stored in your computer, you will need to clear the codes either by clearing them with a scanner or disconnecting the battery for at least 10 minutes to clear the codes. The first step is to turn the key and just let it turn over quick but not enough to where the vehicle starts and shuts down again. Just kind of tap the key as if starting it so the starter turns the engine for a second. When you do that just release the key so it stays in the "Run" position. Lights will be on in the instrument cluster including the security light. The security light may flash on and off. Leave the key in the run position for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes the security light usually goes out but not in all cases. After 10 minutes in the run position, turn the key to the off position but do not remove the key. Wait 10 seconds and do the first step again (Tap again let key stay in run position for 10 minutes). You will need to do this 3 times totally about 30 minutes. On the 3rd time when the 10 minutes is up, turn off key, do not remove the key and then start the vehicle. This procedure should work to progam your key. If it doesn\'t you may have another problem with the security system. Let me know how it turns out and I hope there isn\'t another problem and the computer just lost the transponder code. there is a security relay/module that sometimes goes bad in those Tahoes but try programming the keys first. If that doesn\'t work and you need further help as far as that relay/module & to let me know how it turned out,

What is wrong when you turn the key to start and the radio and all the instruments turn on but the starter doesn't click and the engine doesn't turn on even after trying to jump start it

Dead battery

Dangerous practice to try & jump a dead battery

The battery cables could be loose at either end or corroded internally

Most likely the battery is worn out, if original to car
since it was new, or the starter solenoid is worn

You do not want to jump any vehicle made after the
year 2000 or your asking for possible problems with
todays electronics.

You need a good battery that has been tested & fully
charged, then only jump with a jump pack, not another car

It appears the cap screws off? It doesn't look like a regular radiator cap. I looked at acdelco parts book.
If the cap is stubborn, cold engine, sometimes I use a pair of pliers with wide jaws, grip the cap and screw it off. I haven't seen your type cap, before. If this was my vehicle, I would certainly want to look in the radiator. I'd get that cap off, one way or the other. Of course, nobody wants to damage anything.

Car wont start, NOT battery

sometimes a rubber mallet doesn't work on the stater, you actually have to hit it with something stronger, like a hammer while turning it over. If not check to see if you have a pro lock on your vehicle because if that becomes just a little loose it won't start.

2000 ford explore, wont start. if I prime it, it starts right up and stays running fine. shut it off and it wont start again.

I'd go through, and first check the fuses that go back to the fuel pump, and make sure it is making contact before you have to go chasing ghosts. If that doesn't work, then you might try checking your fuel pressure: prime it, run the engine for a few minutes, then kill it: watch to see if the pressure drops off pretty quick after the fuel pump is off. I'm betting on a ground at the fuel pump, though: the simple act of the vibrating running engine usually provides a decent connection.

I would start with the solenoid as usually when they go bad all you hear is a click when you go to engage the starter and then the starter doesn't rollover the engine.

I have a 2003 hyundai sonata and i dont have the remote for the stock alarm. My alarm keeps going off and my car wont start. I bought a new battery and even tried the key in the door still no luck.....

The 2003 Sonata is equipped with a 'starter KILL' burglar alarm system with disables the starting system (using a N/C 'contacts' configuration instead of a N/O contacts configuration). N/C=Normally closed, and N/O=Normally open contacts. When the alarm goes off with a MY Sonata, the only way to DISARM it is with the key fob (remote) originally programmed for it (unless you purchase a new remote & have it programmed for the vehicle at an authorized Hyundai Service Department). NOTE: So long as the keyless entry & burglar alarm system is functioning/operating normally, the alarm will keep going off and the STARTER KILL function will still prevent you from starting the vehicle. One option is left without purchasing a new remote and having it programmed.
1. When the alarm goes off, get into the vehicle and insert the ignition key into the ignition.
2. Turn the key to the 'RUN' position (NOT the ACC position) and wait for the alarm to STOP (usually about 3 to 5 minutes).
3. The engine should then start using the ignition key.

If this procedure doesn't work, the problem will need further diagnosis by a qualified/certified Hyundai Service Technician.

Hope this helps

If you only get 1 click per key turn, sounds like the copper contact plate in the starter solenoid is worn. If you keep trying to start it and it eventually turns over click after click, then it more than likely time for a starter, or a starter rebuild if you're handy. The kits are available online for under $40

When my truck gets hot it doesn't want to start. Sometimes if you wiggle the key it will start, but when it doesn't start, it makes a clicking noise.

the clicking noise is most likely coming from the solenoid on the starter motor, the solenoid is like a big switch with contacts inside of it,when you turn the key to start the engine these contacts come together to transfer the power to the starter motor,if the solenoid can't be taken apart & the contacts cleaned or replaced it will have to be replaced.......hope this helps....cheers
