Question about 2003 Audi A4

Restricted exhaust pipe?

All of a sudden, the engine has a hard time reving up! But when the car got towed to the service station, it started working! Could the problem have been the cataletic converter being clogged up?

Great! Thanks for the quick response. The problem is, since there is no problem, they cannot help me! So, I am planning to bang on the converter to see if I can hear stuff ratteling inside, if so, then that could have been the problem. Like I said, this was very sudden after a shift in the temperature change in the air (went from over night temps in 30s to 50s)

Could be an exhaust converter

They should last 12 to 14 years unless
you have something that ruined it

A clogged gas filter, but unlikely, that would
be changed every 3 years

Most likely the shop will tell you, if there any good at
whatever they do

Sounds like a blocked catalytic converter. Go to the back of the car and place your hand by the exhaust pipe and feel for exhaust flow. Have a helper accelerate engine speed to check for increase in exhaust flow. Note that driving through water will damage a hot converter and can cause exhaust tubing to collapse resulting in exhaust restriction. Engine must flow exhaust to be able to draw air and fuel to the cylinders. Any restriction will limit power and speed.

Is check engine light on? If so, read codes. If no, does car start OK and get worse as it warms up? Yes=bad coolant temp sensor. No, test for restricted exhaust. This can be done using a vacuum gauge (If you know how) or by unhooking exhaust pipe ahead of converter just to test.

Try checking for a restriction in the system. possibly the catalytic converter. are the pipes before the muffler? you can smack your catalytic converter with a dead blow hammer a few times before you start the engine. you will hear a sound similar to breaking glass from inside the converter it's carbon build up. Start the engine and rev it up a little. If it was constricted the carbon you broke loose will blow on out. If nothing is restricted in exhaust you may have a bad exhaust valve on that side.

The screaming and high RPM means the transmission is downshifting as it should be.
The code 420 is for catalytic converter low efficiency bank one, which could be an exhaust restriction or a fuel problem.
The easiest way to find out if it is a restricted exhaust is to remove the exhaust system where the cat connects to the pipe from the motor and test drive it a short distance. The restriction could be in the connector pipe between the cat and the muffler, or inside the muffler. A mechanic could also use an inferred heat thermometer to check the pipe temp from the engine back to the muffler while the engine is running.

It sounds like a blocked exhaust pipe , try reving engine an feel the pressure that comes out the rear exhaust and take note of engine revs then compare it with another vehicle. if you feel its weak you can try disconnecting front pipe from the first silencer/ exhaust and then do test again and see where reves go to , No need to over rev vehicle.

No power

your catalytic converter could be plugged up. try reving engine in neutral and if it sounds labored or slow then this could be your problem and have the exhaust checked. If exhaust cant escape out of your tail pipe then you cant accelerate quickly or at all.
