You really should get an automobile service manual for your truck. Haynes makes a good one and it is available at your auto parts store. Don't mess with an auto transmission without a guide is cheaper than replacing the transmission!

SOURCE: electric transmission

Hi. I have a '93 Chevy Suburban that is on the 3rd transmission. What you probably have is the earlier 700R4 transmission. What you should have is the 4L60E. I have done ALOT of research on these transmissions, and what I've found out is this: the 4L60E is essentially the same as the 700R4, with the exception that the 4L60E is completely controlled by the vehicle's computer. The 700R4 uses a more antiquated valve body with a TV (throttle valve) cable. In theory, you could use the 700R4 if you connect the TV cable and properly adjust it. If it's a 4X4, your speed sensor is in the transfer case, so that wouldn't be an issue. The 4L60E used in '93 and '94 will only work in those model year vehicles, because of the type of shift solenoids used. The newer units used pulse width modulation solenoids, as opposed to the older on/off solenoids. I have run my truck with the transmission unplugged and the engine still runs fine. The major problem with using the earlier 700R4as opposed to the correct 4L60E, would be emissions compliance. If you want to discuss this further, email me at

SOURCE: I have a 1992 Gmc sierra manual transmission, the gears are hard

It is an adjustment or clutch replacenment issue. Manual transmissions rarely have a lube issue unless you have seen a big puddle of very thick oil in the driveway.

I think I'd be looking at the clutch of this 16 year old vehicle. Unless you have the tools, time and skill to change the clutch, this is probably a job better left to a professional. Adjusting the clutch mechanism might help for a while but I think you will soon need a clutch job on your GMC.

SOURCE: grand prix torque converter locks up too soon

Either the speed sensor, TCC solenoid , ECU or a stuck check ball in a lockup plate. I recommend taking this to a transmission shop this could get fustrating.

Is it normal for my 1985 GMC Sierra TH350 tranny to shift really early. It will shift into 3rd gear by about 18-23 mph any suggestions

No this is not normal and may be a governor or other internal issue with the transmission. Have a local transmission rep[air shop test drove it and see what they think, that is in most cases free.

What causes the torque converter not to cut in on a 2005 GMC 2500 sierra, causing the transmission to heat up? This happens when pulling.

the torque converter isnt locking up, if it doesnt lock then it just spins causing the transmission to slip and heat to build. it sounds like you may be looking at a rebuild soon. i suggest going with suncoast transmissions, its what i have in my pulling truck.

My 1990 automatic GMC Sierra wont shift out of 2nd, it just revs higher and higher. Any advice? (It will shift from 1st to 2nd when I take my foot off the gas)

Check your transmission fluid, if it is low, the transmission cannot shift into the correct gear from lack of hydraulic pressure. Be sure to check it while the truck is running.

If it is full, you may need to change the fluid and filter; over time the fluid will break down and trash the filter leading to low pressure problems which is why your truck fails to shift any more than 2nd.

Another problem may be that the torque converter is failing to lock yet again from lack of hydraulic pressure or its just worn out.

I have a 1500, 5.7, 2 wheel drive with a 4 speed transmission with O/D . How many times should it shift including the O/D and what does the lock in torque converter have to do with it?

It should shift 4 times. 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 Then you will feel the torque converter clutch lock up which feels like a shift. The torque converter locks to increase gas mileage.

Chevy TH350 trans problem

if you just had it rebuilt should ba a warranty if is was im sure you wouldnt be on here asking so did you install new torque converter when the trans was rebuilt? check the trans filter not clogged how long did it run after the rebuild or did you install it yourself after the rebuild and it doesnt work ? let me just say the torque converter should always be replaced with the transmission new or rebuilt and when the transmission is being installed you have to make absolutely sure the converter is all the way back on the trans if not you will damage the front pump on trans and would need to replace it .
