Sounds like a bad head gasket. Check your oil after car sat all night. See if there is white , or any signs of water in your oil. Smell dipstick at the same time to see if there is the smell of gas in the oil. While car is cold check the coolant for traces of oil in the cooling system. , or the smell of gas present. When the head gasket goes,it no longer separates the different ports for oil, coolant, and gas mixtures. What happens is that coolant gets into your engine cylinders where gas, oil, and air mix, and ignite. This causes steam to come out of the tail pipe. If you are going to change it yourself, keep me informed and I can walk you through it. What size motor is in the car?

Chances are, you have at least one bad fuel injector.

More specifically, you have one or more bad injector seals.

The way your fuel injection system works is with constant pressure to all injectors while running. The injectors are basically a combination of an electrically operated valve and a spray nozzle. There is one injector per cylinder and each injector is supposed to provide fuel precisely when your car's computer sends an electrical impulse to open the valve. While the electrical portion of the valve and the spray nozzle may both be fine, there is a seal (usually an O-ring) that prevents fuel from entering the injector when it is not activated by a signal from the computer. If this seal goes bad it will allow some amount fuel to flow all the time, more as it gets worse.

Usually with white smoke, one would think head gasket or some other related cooling system problem, but I have seen this problem previously, so in your case I would check for leaky injectors. I bet you have at least one.

I hope this helps.

SOURCE: White Smoke

It may dissipate only because it is cooking off faster after warmup.
You have a hose or radiator leak; check your coolant level often until you have it serviced.

I wouldn't use the stuff but there are several 'stopleak' products in auto parts stores.

Don't let it hang too long; if you run low on coolant, you are risking overheating and possibly a blown head gasket which you may already have anyhow.
The coolant leak can come from hoses, the radiator and the head gasket failed near a cooling channel.
Also check your oil and if it looks like Jergens (hand lotion), you already have a blown gasket; that comes from oil and water mixed together and makes a poor lubricant.

SOURCE: 2000 F-250 7.3 diesel, cuts out runs rough no power

Well, you have to let diesels warm up before you drive them so the engine gets warm and it may not sound right at first because if its not warm the compression gets off and doesnt fire right. If you try to give it too much gas before its warm, extra diesel will get in the cylinders and misfire. Then when it does fire, there is a lot of extra fuel in it so that causes the smoke and smell. You should always let it warm up for a bit before driving when you havent driven it for a while.

SOURCE: gas smell and smoke

I don't see how trans fluid answers this question because i would first be wondering where th fuel smell and smoke are coming from... i had a leaking fuel rail on my truck and replace it along with the injectors and had better mpg and no fuel smell or smoke... maybe this helps better than just say trans fluid....

SOURCE: Bad smell coming from heater/ smoke coming out vents

I had the same problem in my 98 Dodge Dakota! Replaced the heater core, problem solved. No more funky coolant smell and erie fog coming through my vents. I bought the heater core at rockauto.com online. Have purchased many items now from them. All factory parts so far at half the price of even AutoZone, even with the shipping. Also, you usually have to wait only a couple of days depending on the part and they have EVERYTHING.

if it takes 5-10 mins of running before black smoke disappear i think you could have broken rings causing engine oil into the combustion chamber. you could observe white smoke if you have just changed oil.
solution would be to replace piston rings. it would save u a lot if u could diy.

Smokes really bad at the beginning, but after you drive the car for 15 min or so it almost stops. What could that be?

Hi :) What is happening? you say Well when you shut the engine down the oil is hot and it runs by the valve stems because the stem guides are warren out and sits on the piston till you start the engine next time. It take a bit to burn it off then it burns clean till the next time you stop running the engine for any lenght of time.Take it in to the shop and have new valve guides put in it or unbrella seals put on under the valve spring this will stop the oil from leaking past the valve stems. I put a cup of transmission oil/Fluid/Dexron2/3 every time i change my oil to keep my valve seals soft and rubbery and it helps

I have an 01 Impala 3.8 engine. At first start-up white smoke is seen, smells like raw gas, and tail pipe is black as coal. Fuel milage isn't good either. Would the regulator be bad?

Whenever I start the car it smokes than after warming up it stops smoking.

The key is how much smoke? Does the smoke have a smell to it. Are you consuming any fluids, like coolant, or oil?

Tons White smoke that is sweet smelling is usually coolant getting into the combustion chamber.

Less white smoke, especially if other cars are doing it, is normal. For every gallon of gas that you burn, you generate a gallon (GALLON) of water. so this water usually evaporates, but sometimes not. It has little or no smell.

If the smoke is bluish white, that is oil, but usually your converter would fill with oil, and cause error codes, or loss of power. This smell is distinct, but not necessarily sweet.... After the converter heats up, it may be able to burn off the oil and the smoke stops.

What are you consuming, fluid wise, will direct where you go next.

After starting car it sputters and white smoke from exhast. I drive the car for 5 min, sputtering the whole time, and turn it off - will not start until it is cranked and gas pressed for couple min. Then...

White smoke is usually from water and water will make the car splutter. Did you get water in your tank at some time. If you have water in your fuel, you will have to drain the tank and refill with good fuel. The engine will run fine once it is hot but if a lot of water goes into a hot cylinder it can cause a lot of damage.

sounds like valve guids are wearing out.. drying out and cracking. only fix is to replace them. or try a heavier oil. sometimes that will help depending on the severity of the problem.
