Question about 1989 Toyota Pickup SR5
First things first, It sound like your tranny may of had its better days. Yes your sincronisers maybe worn out. but some toyota trannys have a shifter that has a broken seet and/or worn bussing.
this is what it looks like.
This is the bushing.
These parts are in the top of the tranny where the shifter goes in i would start there. If it is fine then start thinking about a rebuild. I hope this helps. I believe these parts a less than 20$.
Marlin Crawler sell them.

Took it to the shop and they tightnd somethin up now it works great. They didnt even charge me. Hopefully thats all that it is for you too. But most likely your gears.

You have a transmission problem. It's going out on you. I'd call around and compare prices to change your transmission.

One quick fix, that may or may not help....Under your shifting boot, turn the collar that holds in your shifter, it should release, and let you take the shifter up. There is a plastic ball on the end, see that it isn't worn, and look at the part that the plastic ball goes into. Too much wear here can cause a problem. These are available!
If not...synchro's are very difficult to replace in a standard transmission.
