Question about 1998 Dodge Caravan

1 Answer

Where is the BCM located in 1996 Caravan, show me picture.

Runs for two seconds and shuts off, was told it was the pcm and coil. Replaced the pcm and coil and the problem persists. Dealership said it was the pcm and bcm and that both needed to be replaced at same time.

if you have a gray key then you have skim on it and the new pcm must be set up by a dealer or someone that has the drb to access it correctly and the key code information.. do you have a red security light on also?

Pcm was stolen at repair shop. put re-maned one and had it programed to vehicle.now it wont stay running and has a miss. ran like new prior,,had trans replaced

Bought a bad PCM? Wrong one? Just got a PCM, it was for a 3.4 engine. They told the manager it would work for a 3.8. I told the manager it won't. Had to hook it up and prove it to the manager. Security was the first issue, then the transmission would be the next. I didn't even make it pass the security. A 3.4 PCM will run the 3.8 engine, with other computers replaced. But will not run the transmission correctly. And this is our problem. I told the manager to inform the customer that they had the wrong PCM. I also told him to give the car back. Then told him I could fix it, but needed PCM,BCM, Ignition switch, key and chip, from one junk car.

Where is the body control module located in 2002 gmc envoy?

It's under your back seat. See here for picture http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/261068608953?lpid=82
Here is the relearn procedure which you have to perform so the new BCM will recognize your key and start the car:
For those vehicles that use a BCM, the BCM can learn the resistance value of the existing key by using the relearn process. In order for the vehicle to start, the BCM (as well as the Passkey module in other vehicles) must identify the resistor pellet in the key, then the BCM sends a password to the PCM. If this password matches the password stored in the PCM, the system enables fuel delivery. So you can see that if either the BCM or PCM are replaced, a relearn procedure is necessary. This same relearn procedure can be used if an ignition key with a different resistance value is used to replace the existing key. Before beginning the relearn, make sure there is a fully charged battery in the vehicle, and both the BCM and PCM are properly powered up and in communication with each other. Now you're ready to initiate the relearn procedure.

1. First, insert the ignition key and turn the ignition switchto the "On" position (Do not start the engine). Leave the switch on for 11 minutes. The security light may flash or be on steady during this 11 minute period. Make sure the light is no longer on or flashing before proceeding to #2 .
2. Turn the ignition switchoff for 30 seconds.
3. Turn the ignition switchto the "On" position (as in step #1) for 11 minutes again.
4. Turn the ignition switchoff for another 30 seconds.
5. Turn the ignition switchto the "On" position for 11 minutes a third time.
6. Turn the ignition switchoff for 30 seconds one final time.
7. Turn the ignition switchto the "On" position one final time and wait 30 seconds.
8. Attempt to start the engine. If the engine starts and runs normally, the relearn is complete. If the engine does not start, check for trouble codes and address them before attempting the relearn procedure again.
You can pick one oif these up for $20 or less at a junkyard. For those vehicles that use a BCM, the BCM can learn the resistance value of the existing key by using the relearn process. Hooked battery up wrong on 1992 explorer, stereo smoked and now the windshield wipers won't shut off. No blown fuses just popped the line circuit from starter relay to alternator. Replaced battery...

you must RUN the scanner/computer for easy diagnostic, and fix it.
Remember the electronic vehicle is very complicated, You can have some faulty: PCM+ignition coil+BCM+sensor+etc.
see the diagram attached.

TEST ACTION APPLICABILITY
1 NOTE: If a fuel level circuit or performance DTC is set along with P1681,
diagnose the circuit/performance DTC before continuing.
Turn the ignition on.
With the DRBIIIt, erase DTCs.
Start the engine on and off several times. Leave the engine running for at least 20
second each time.
With the DRBIIIt, read DTCs.
Does the DTC reset?
All
Yes ! Go To 2
No ! Refer to the INTERMITTENT CONDITION symptom in the
Driveability category.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 - NGC.
2 Ignition on, engine not running.
With the DRBIIIt, attempt to communicate with the BCM.
Can communication be established with the BCM?
All
Yes ! Go To 3
No ! Refer to the Communication Category and perform the appropriate
symptom related to no communication with BCM.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 - NGC.
3 Turn the ignition on.
Using the DRBIIIt, read the Fuel Level parameter in the PCM.
Does the DRBIIIt display a fuel level value?
All
Yes ! Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance
with the Service Information.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 - NGC.
No ! Go To 4

TEST ACTION APPLICABILITY
4 Turn the ignition off.
Disconnect the PCM harness connectors.
Disconnect the BCM harness connector.
CAUTION: DO NOT PROBE THE PCM HARNESS CONNECTORS. PROBING
THE PCM HARNESS CONNECTORS WILL DAMAGE THE PCM TERMINALS
RESULTING IN POOR TERMINAL TO PIN CONNECTION. INSTALL
MILLER SPECIAL TOOL #8815 TO PERFORM DIAGNOSIS.
Measure the resistance of the PCI Bus circuit from the BCM harness connector to the
appropriate terminal of special tool #8815.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?
All
Yes ! Replace BCM in accordance with the Service Information.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 - NGC.
No ! Repair the PCI Bus circuit between the PCM and the BCM for an
open.

1996 Dodge Neon Will run smooth for a good 15-17 min. then stall like someone shut off the key. New coil, plugs, wiring harness,(mine looked like it got real hot at some point)temp. sensor, air filter,...

The code reads: ignition coil #1 primary circuit. If the coil pack has been replaced, then it is likely the PCM (computer package) is defective and needs to be replaced. That circuit is driven directly by the PCM. This information was taken from a '96 Dodge Caravan service manual (3.3 V6 engine with coil pack ignition system), and should be similar. If your engine uses a distributor instead of a coil pack, then the above code doesn't apply. Even if it does apply, the code implies a 'miss' situation, not complete engine stoppage unless the computer operates the 'automatic shut down relay'??

it could be, but there are other things to consider. first did you check the fuses? the connector plugs under the dash? the relays in the junction box under the hood? i would check these first and let me know of the results...
