That sounds like the egr valve, or egr solonoid.
(Exhaust gas recirculation). Have them checked, could be one or both bad.

Check it with a code reader or scanner, to see which sensor is at fault.
Do not replace any sensor before you know it's bad.

Malfunction indicator light on 2006 hyundai sante fe

Probably emissions related like an o2 sensor. The only way to find out will be to have the vehicle scannned by mechanic to extract a fault code. If yu get the code I will give more info but your mechanic will probably explain what it means anyway.

Was there a Check Engine light? When a 'check engine light' (MIL=Malfunction Indicator Lamp) is turned on, there is a DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) set/stored in the ECM/PCM (Engine Control Module/Powertrain Control Module). This code identifies which engine management system component/function experienced a malfunction. Once you pull/read this code, you may begin diagnosis.

The malfunction indicator light is on in my 2002 Santa Fe can you tell me why...the owner's manual gave general information..is this problem a big fix...thank you

there are a thousand reasons that light could be on. You will need the engine computer scanned for trouble codes. one common thing is to make sure the gas cap is on tight. if its loose, tighten it up, it may take a few days for the light to go off, if its tight, then there is another reason, and a scan will point in the direction of the fix.

The malfunction indicator light remains on in my Hyundai 2002 Santa Fe...can you tell me the reason for this...my owner's manual gave general information...thank you

the reason for general info is that it is too difficult to say what it is without a scan.

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5932051-check_engine_light_check. These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

2001 Sante Fe O2 sensors

On a single exhaust there are two. One before the catalytic converter and one after it. You need special socket to remove them. O2 sensor have four wires. Two is for the heater. O2 sensor have heater inside them thats why they are called heated O2 sensors. The other two is for the actually leads that sense the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas.
When the heating element in the O2 sensor is burnt out it would have a code related to the heater circuit malfunction. An old O2 sensor would have a code about slow response such as P0133 for example. Bad connection somewhere may indicate no activity.etc. O2 sensor are good for about 2 years then they start giving you problem.
