sounds like a rod or valve. think it's coming from top end of engine. but i know after adding the oil, if it's still a valve it can only be a valve "sticking". but it feels and sounds much worse. the knocking gets worse when accelerating. nice and loud when in park and idling. pretty worried considering the cold and having to get two kids off to school.

is the bottom end knocking like a rod? or is it just the lifters and rockers ratteling? is the knocking comming from the top of engine?

Caused damage to the Engine. You will need an Overhaul at this Point before it gets Worse and More Expensive.

Just bought a used 1989 Delta 88 Royale Brougham. It worked fine but when I got it home and plugged it in (its winter) it won't start now. It turns over but won't stay running

is this a diesel? surely not. the plug in heats the oil in the oil pan to make the engine start easily in wintertime. you may have a faulty plugin, or if someones installed a deisel motor, you most likely have bad glow plugs, hmmm if gas, i suggest you check for faulty oildipsick heater or bad or weak fuel filter, fuel pump, it really makes a difference whether it's deisel or gas. please repost if this does'nt help, thank you for choosing fixya.com

Check your oil filter - The oil filter on these is located right next to the crank pulley.

Location of oil filter in 1997 oldsmobile delta 88 LS?

Well, in my 1989 Olds 88, the oil filter is just above the right swingarm for the wheel. It's an interesting reach from underneath, and the oil drips directly onto the frame of the car, but that's where the filter should be.

I believe they use the same 3800 (3.8L V6) engine up through 1997 or 1998...so you should be able to find it there. Hope that helps!
