Question about 1998 Ford Escort
I start my van with jump leads, keep it running for a while and then switch it off ,but it will not start again .when i turn the key the lights get dim and the key just turns but doesnt click
Put a multi metre on the battery when the engine is running you should see 13.5-14.5 volts if you see less than that you have a charging fault not a battery fault. charge the battery right up and check again as the battery may have a dead cell and is failing to accept the charge.

You may find you have a bad earth somewhere, so i would check the earths. if you have a bad earth at wont matter how long you leave it running the charge will just dissipate, then i would check the alternator again if its not working it wont matter how long you leave your engine running it will not charge the battery.
