Wierd grinding sound from manual transmission

So when i start the car the engine was making this unusual sound. The sound was coming from the transmission. So i went in the car and help down the clutch pedal and the sound went away and when i released it the sound came back. Its a manual transmission. Can this be a lack of oil in there or is it something serious? Also how do i solve this problem? Thank you.

Do you think it is safe to drive a car for another 10 miles on the freeway that suddenly made a whirring sound and emitting a burnt rubber smell?

There is a good chance you won't get the 10 miles. And, depending upon your car and what the problem is, it may be the most expensive 10 miles you ever tried! You may not understand car mechanics, but it is not a bad idea to open the hood of the car when something like this happens and look to see where the smoke/odor is coming from. You may find it is a simple worn out belt. Or it could be a frozen pulley causing the belt to slip and burn off. If the belt were to break, you could lose steering control, electrical power (eventually), and possibly even engine cooling (some water pumps are driven off the belt). And the broken belt can whip around and cause even more damage. It doesn't pay to gamble with car repairs. A tow may seem costly, but massive engine repairs will be even more so, and you wouldn't even have avoided the tow!

Could be transmission. Or a plugged catalytic converter, or the rear differential. Does it get worse when warmed up? Is there grinding/unusual noises? Where does the sound come from? Try starting out with the transmission in first and manually shift up the gears as you drive. Does it seem to slip? I assume its an automatic. Depending on your level of experience, they can be complicated to replace yourself.

My manual, will not go into 1st. or 3 rd. grear

If it grinds when you try to put it in 1st or 3rd, it might be syncros in the transmission. If the shifter just won't go to those positions, I would suspect the linkage needs adjustment. It would be unusual for the linkage to require adjustment unless the car was worked on or otherwise damaged.

There are many possibilities that can cause car to make noise.

It's actually from where the noise is coming from. Front end or rear end. From engine area or from inside the steering or from brakes.

Starter motor grinding

This sounds like you will need to remove the starter to be sure...this grinding is usually caused by the spring loaded armature not releasing to retract into the starter after starting...this grinding means the starter is not disengaging from the flywheel...sometimes installing shims to shorten the engagement length works, but on your late model Toyota, this would be unusual...probably will need to replace the starter. Continued driving could cause serious damage to the flywheel, a costly repair...don't wait to repair or replace...the engine and transmission need to be seperated to replace a damaged flywheel. Try the starter first. Hope this helps. You share a famous name with "Harry Morgan" of the MASH TV series:)

Transmission is shifting hard in my 2004 pontiac grand am

It does have a dipstick can be hard to find though check behind the motor kind tucked under the fire wall the grinding sounds unrelated to the hard shifting since it happens when your in park and the only trans parts rootating at that time is the torque converter and input shaft that fact that its not constant kinda points me more toward the belt system either a bad tensioner, water pump, power steering pump, a/c compressor or clutch, or an idler pullley
