Question about 1998 Volvo S70

1 Answer

Volvo quit running

A few weeks ago, my 98 Volvo S70 overheated. I caught it pretty quickly, added coolant and everything seemed to be ok. A couple weeks later, I was driving on the freeway, and the car started to loose power. I pulled to the side of the freeway and as I came to a stop, the motor died. I looked under the hood and there was oil that had come out of the filler cap and was all over the inside of the hood, the firewall and the exhaust manifold. As I was pulling over, the car seemed to be smoking from the tailpipe too. The car didn't make any crazy knocking noises or any thing, like I'd threw a rod, or some sort of valvetrain issue or something. Somebody told me I may have blown a hole in my piston. I think if that was the case, I would have heard something going wrong. Does anybody have any advice on what this could be, or where I could start on figuring this out?? Thanks for reading, and any help you could provide would be appreciated!!

If the smoke was white, then you've probably blew the head gasket. Check for coolant in the oil as well as the coolant level. Coolant in the oil and low coolant in the radiator or reserve bottle combined are good indication of blown head gasket.

SOURCE: 1984 Volvo 244 240 DL Stalled and won't start! Please Help

I had a similar problem (same car- 1984 Volvo 242), and it turned out to be a simple "fuse"! It was the fuel pump fuse, just inside the driver's door, under the hood release. (#6 or #7 down from the top.)
There are MANY things it "could" be, but that would be the least item in a "process of elimination" and hopefully a 'FIX'.

SOURCE: 1988 Volvo 740 Smoke from Oil Cap and Dipstick hole when removed

The smoke coming from the valve cover and dipstick is called blowby. It is combustion gases the have passes by the piston rings . A small amount of blowby is normal on all engines. The PCV system(Positve Crankcase Ventilation)pulls the gases out and directs them back into the egine to be burnt again. I would first check the PCV system to make sure it is working proper. Also a compression test of the engine will tell you which cylinder is not sealing proper. If the compression test is ok, a leak down check of the cylinders will determine if the engine is wore out.

volvo is a great car and usually very reliable, the blacl smoke is from too much gas or not enough spark, check to make sure all the brake lights in the rear work,if a bulb is out it could trigger the ABS light, have one of the bigger auto stores scan the car for you and get back to me with the codes, we'll go from there please rate my fix as i strive to be the best Ray

My 98 volvo s70 won't start right away when it's colder than 50 degrees outside. It takes a few tries and I have to wait a couple of minutes between tries.

u need a winter thermostart the engine rings gets smaller with th cold tempetuare so the engine will not hold the compression when the fuel is ignited in the chamber to make the car start

I have a 1993 940 Volvo that is overheating and I do not think it is the radiator. We replaced the thermostat last night and I had no problems this morning then this afternoon when I was driving home it...

Make sure the electric fans are operating as they should.
Check for a blocked radiator core,
Check water pump drive OK,
Get a radiator shop to do 'coolant gas check' for a blown head gasket (looks for combustion gas bubbles in the water system).

Have tried getting quality gasoline at a reliable station? It sounds like water in your fuel system. Add a couple bottles of Iso-Heet fuel system dryer everytime you fill up the next few times, and that should cure it.

1999 volvo s70 overheating

Yes this has happened to me. The coolant temperature sensor tells the radiator fan when to turn on to cool the radiator. When this sensor is faulty your vehicle is overheating and it can cause a blown head gasket if not replaced. I hope this was helpful.

Volvo S70 won't start - battery, generator, or other

usually multiple clicking (like a machine gun) does indicate lw battery voltage. did you get 11.9 volts with it running or car off? with running you should be over 13.6 min up to 14.0 volts. these cars have a fair amount of electronics with some residual voltage draws which may shorten battery life. 4 yrs is not too bad. i would consider replacing battery
