there is also a small valve body you are supposed to replace when replaceing the phasers... also there is a ssm for replacing the valve lash adjusters. alot of time the small engine tick you hear can be a cracked exhaust manifold too so checking those really close is heavily advised because the cracks are really hard to see sometimes. i have seen broken push rods on these engines and they can be a pain to pinpoint where the noise is comming from. hope this helps

check oil level ---yes it can but tapping noise can be a lot more reasons --worn oil -low oil pressure--low oil level--rocker loose-worn or damaged lifter-worn damaged valves --timing chain --water pump--pulley --really anything can cause a tapping noise --try to isolate the area or sound and diagnose problem

Lifter replacement 5.4L

I must mention that engines with the DOHC emblem had a problem with "Cam Phasers". These would rattle and knock very similar to a Diesel and the noise would fade at about 2000RPM.

This engine has 2 timing chains. Since the Camshafts are on top, the lifters are under the cam. You would need to remove the cam to access the lifters. You will need to keep the cam gear positioned or lose the mark. There are cheater tools which allow you to sneak the cam gear away from the head to change the Cam phasers.

The cam phasers can then be removed. This is perhaps as much as you need done. I retired before this style of engine was built, so I can not tell you if the Camshafts can slide forward to be removed once you remove the Phasers and gear. Otherwise you are looking at a full frontal disassembly, just the Cam Phasers alone required full frontal disassembly in the original Service Manual.

You can read more about this engine and find Videos on the Web. I have an Engineering print but an assembled engine may have clearance issues. Wish I could be of more help, but you can get quite a rattle from the Phaser issues. Don't blame the wrong part.

2005 ford super duty truck 5.4 moter makes a ticking noise in top right of motor it only does it wile idleing and after motor is hot I was told it might be a cam phazor I don't know help thanks

Depends on the miles of the engine also, could be a cam phaser or it could be carbon chunks caught in the lifter, could be a weak lifter spring. Valve cover will have to come off to find out.

2004 f150 5.4 liter has rough idle and when i punch it it sputters and pops through intake and boggs badly. do i need to check vacum problem first. then what

Check for a Vacuum leak, Then go to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan. You did not mention any other noises, but if you have something like a light "tap" similar to a Diesel, see if that noise goes away above 2000RPM. The engines with the DOHC emblem have a problem with "Cam Phasers" and Ford has an extended Warranty for that defect. 7 years plus limited miles, at least 75,000 to 85,000.

The popping through the Intake sounds like early valve timing. The Phasers are used to synchronize the valves on each cylinder bank. One bank may be "out of time". The repairs are expensive, but some shops have found shortcuts for replacement. The 2 Phasers alone total $500.

I hope your troubles are small. With the DOHC motors it is important to keep the oil clean and consider using a Detergent additive to protect the Phasers.

Try a TPS, Throttle position sensor. Its job is to send a signal to the vehicles computer to advance timing and fuel for the throttle position.

If you have the Double Overhead Cam engine DOHC V-8, there is a problem with the engine. A part called a "Cam Phaser" now has an extended Warranty. The Phasers are a variable valve timing device. The engine will make a Tapping noise until 2000RPM and then the noise will go away.

In any case, go to Autozone or Oreillys for a FREE scan of your engine. This scan can also identify Transmission problems too.

What dose a cam phaser sound like and wear dose the sound come form . on a 2005 ford f150 fx4

The cam phaser I would say wounds most like lifter noise from a 70s car, that ticking noise. At least the really loud cam phasers do sound like that. Some are not quite so noisy. My '06 has a bit of that ticking lifter type noise to it.,

Tapping or knocking noise in 2009 f150 4.6 3v engine

Tell them you heard about a recall for the CAM PHASERS. When the noise is present and you rev the engine to 2000RPM the noise will fade away. This verifys the CAM PHASERS are acting up.

Usually the sound progresses to the DIESEL level. Further use can damage the engine. There is a service bulletin for this problem. Yours must be an early 2009, last I heard the problem was for 2004-2008 models with dual cams.

Engine noise

You have the 5.4 3 valve engine in your Navigator, Ford has had various problems with noise from this motor. The cost of repair will vary because this noise cam come from different places, such as cam phasers, valve lash adjusters and sometimes the ticking noise is actually coming from the injectors which is considered normal. I would have it checked out by the dealer. -Jared
