Question about Cars & Trucks
Could be several things, a vac leak, dirty throttle body, or faulty idle air control valve.
The computer controls idle speed by how much air enters the throttle body thru the valve.
Usually a vac leak would speed up the engine unless it is causing the rough idle.

the throttle body is probably gummed up. You need to buy some throttle body intake cleaner and clean the throttle body. After you've cleaned it up, recconnect the battery and it should reprogram the engine's idle and your problem should be solved. It's pretty easy.

Check and clean Idle air control valve. Make sure its responding to signal as well. Also make sure ther are no vacuum hoses disconnected. This may not be a "cure" but it's a good place to start.

Sounds like a vaccuum, or gasket leak. Easiest way to diagnose is to get a can of starting fluid and spay it around any vacuum hoses and intake area while it's running. Be careful! Starting fluid is extremely flammable!
If you notice an acceleration, or de-celeration while spraying the starting fluid, you should be able to pinpoint the leak.

SOURCE: 1983 280z fuel injected starts
You will need to adjust the timing by rotating the distributor and using a timing light gun. The correct timing for the 1983 Datsun/Nissan is set at 8 degrees for both the manual and automatic transmissions (non turbo)
The correct spark plug gap is: 044 (In thousandths of an inch)
Firing order is: 1-5-3-6-2-4 ------------- front | | of | 1 2 3 4 5 6 | the distributor rotates counter clockwise
Also make sure your fuel filter is clean and your plug wires are good
If you have the turbo model, the correct timing is set at 24 degrees for both manual and automatic transmissions)
Before top dead center
*Set at warm idle speed (650 RPM)
*Distributor vacuum hose disconnected & plugged
*Transmission in drive (parking brake engaged)

Hi. This issue has several causes, but the oil light indicator is a strong sign of low pressure in the engine. This will cause the engine lubrication rate to drop, thus, producing a illuminated oil light, and erratic Oil pressure readings. The necessary actions are to have a manual oil pressure test ran on this engine, asap. When running a manual oil pressure test, you will discover if the true oil pressure is low, or normal. If the test proves that the oil pressure is, indeed, low, this will confirm that the Oil pump is suspect.
Now, if the true readings given during the manual oil pressure test are indicating that the pressure is normal, this will be the result of a failed sending unit(oil pressure switch). Although the oil pressure is suspect, this is not your only issue here. There seems to be a abnormal compression rate, present. This is causing the rough idle, and erratic RPMs. I recommend to administer a engine block compression test, as well. This test will discover if , indeed, there are issues within the cylinder heads, and block structure, such as a worn head gasket, cylinder wall issues, and cracked block. Normally, these issue will send signs, like white, or gray smoke out the tail pipe, or discolored oil. It will, also, promote erratic RPM ratings, and a rough idle. Have the oil pressure test, and engine block compression test ran, asap.
Once the test are administered, you will be able to isolate the actual problem areas, more accurately. Check the spark plug wire sets, and ignition assembly for faults, also.
