Question about 2004 Mazda MPV

Hi, I have a 2004 mazda mpv, and it shuts off every time a make a stop, and cant keep it in idle, have to press brake and accelerator every time I make a stop so that it wont turn off, help!!!

Now its getting worse, when I turn it on I have to accelerate a little so when I shift gear it wont turn off

Start with the intake system. sounds like a vacuum leak somewhere.

SOURCE: transmission kicks shifting to second gear

This is a known issue with certain '03 and '04 MPV transmissions; my 2003 had the same problem. There is a Mazda technical service bulletin about this - 05-003/004 (Shift Shock). You need to take the van to a qualified shop and have them flash the transmission control module (TCM) with new firmware.

I had this done. It did not completely fix the problem but it did reduce its occurrence.

It sounds to like you my have a fuel delivery problem or timimg belt has slipped.(rubber belts stretchsometimes) I recommend the going to your local parts store and have run a diagnostic . If its the timimg the computer will give a code as well as a fuel code. This free to customers .

could be your torque convertor and if it is experiencing some chatter in the shifting then most likely you need to go to the transmission shop for a shift kit which is inexpensive.

SOURCE: The rpm fluctuates at idle

It could be several things...low fuel pressure, a lazy 0 2 sensor, and even an IAC. If there isn't any service engine lights coming on, you will need a qualified tech to do the test since a lazy 0 2 sensor has to be looked at with some type of a volts meter and a scanner has the capability of doing a better job yet since you wouldn't have to get underneath the vehicle. Don't be fooled into thinking that it is just one thing; it could be several depending on the mileage.

My mazda mpv 2004 keeps discharging my battery, what could be wrong with it?


many things can drain the battery: a weak battery connection, a faulty component, or a small short. check to see if the braking lights stay on after you have exited the car. I know how that sounds, but it could happen that the braking pedal switch is loose. just an idea. best luck to you.

Time for a brake job. You will probably have to get disk/drums turned.

I ahve same issue with my 2004 MPV. I replaced the plugs, coils etc. No help.

Same problem in a 2004 MPV


Hi there im in australia and i have come across a few mazdas not just the mPV that have this same problem. if it was the air flow meter you would be able to accelerate as the computer wouldnt pickup that more air is entering the engine therefore it wouldnt compensate with fuel! try disconnecting the battery with the negative terminal for 60 seconds. if that dosnt work try cleaning the throttle body and IAC and get someone with a decent scantool to reset the idle.
