A stretched timing chain will be accompanied by a rhythmic slapping sound. A timing belt should be tight and not have slack. At its longest run, pressing in with your finger will move it perceptibly, but only a little, and it should not be loose.

sometimes when trying to engage a gear, it is possible for the teeth of the gears to be selected actually line up with each other so preventing engagement. When this happens recycle the clutch operation as this allows the gears to spin slightly and allow the gear selection. It is most noticeable if you start the engine with your foot on the clutch and try to immediately select first or reverse

Your timing chain is behind the timing chain cover. This means all of the front engine parts have to be removed to reach it. You will need to pull the Radiator and they recommend removing the Grille.

It is a major disassembly of the front of the motor, unlike a Serpetine belt. To check for the need of replacement, you can try to turn the crank with a breaker bar. While you do this you should have the distributor cap off. Then watch the rotor inside the distributor turn. It should be almost immediate. If there is slack in the chain there will be a delay in the turning of the distributor rotor.

Another way to test is to use a timing light while the engine is running and see if the timing changes for no reason. Now I do not agree with this method because if you have mechanical weights in the distributor the timing may move because of a worn breaker plate or distributor drive gear. Of course that extra play in the distributor gear/ cam gear can lead you to believe the timing chain is loose when it is not.

Since the distributor comes out easily, you need to find a Speed shop who can test your distributor before going to all the work of getting at your timing chain. Then if there still is slack in the timing, you will know it is a chain and not the distributor.

So there is room for error using either method, but I feel you are farther ahead by using the breaker bar method.

the cam gear has a round hole that you will have to use a light and a mirror to look through the hole and see the t mark . put cam gear at 12 oclock and look through the hole and you will see a straight line on cam cap just below valve cover and you might have to clean the cam cap off to see it. on the outside of the crank gear there is a mark between the teeth just to the right of the key way slot. on the oil pump there is a dot at about 1-3 oclock and you might have to clean off the oil pump to see it. put crank gear on and line up the marks then on the cam gear look in the hole and put the line on cam cap in the middle of the hole.put belt on and get all the slack out that you can putting the slack towards the tensioner trying not to move the gears and check your marks and if all good release the tensioner and then tighten. put the crank bolt in and turn the engine over 360 degrees and recheck marks and if all good check to see if there is any slack in belt towards the front of car.if there is take a 14mm wrench and put on cam bolt and lightly tap on it towards the firewall to get the slack out and release tensioner and retighten double check t marks and you should be on the road again.

I am going through this now my 2000 ram 3500 always had a problem with reverse

I chocked it up to a quirk of the transmission! But my mechanic found out that they only placed this trans in late 1999 and early 2000 trucks first years the 6 speed was offered. It comes with a smaller clutch and synchronizer that are no longer available unless you find a dealer with old stock sitting on a shelf. I am having to updated my cultch and am having to replace the gears that will allow the new type synchronizer to work this in just a about ½ the price of a new transmission BOHICA/FUBAR

So just get ready for a shock if you need to replace synchronizer rings

Have the front end alignment checked as it may the cause of wandering. With the truck parked and the steering centered, but the engine running, wiggle the steering wheel back and forth while watching the left front wheel. It should respond to the steering action without any observable slack. Have someone watch both front wheels while doing this and see if there is slack between the two wheels. Any slack here is indicative of slop in the cross-wheel coupling. Hope this helps!

Differentail slack / back lash

if your talking about turning the driveshaft both ways and feeling that slack,no that is just wear and tear on the pinion gear and ring gear.

Truck wont shift out of first gear at the right rpm.Some times second gear is there others it is not. Same for third. trans dont slip when its in gear.

you'll want to check your detent cable at the throttle body, if the cable is tight then it's out of adjustment. you should have slack in it. Basically it's trying to stay in low gear because it thinks your at wide open throttle and needs to downshift. There's a clip that you have to pull out and the pull the cable forward and at the same time put the clip back, this will give you slack. You may have to adjust it a few times.

I need to know the proper procedure for installing the dual overhead cam, where the timimg marks should be

If you look behind the cam gears you will see a little nipple or indention in the metal baking and in the cam gears there should be a little hole line the two of them up to have the cam gears lined up. On the crank gear you will have a little notch on the back edge of the gear and on the block you will see either a notch or a nipple on it at about 1 or 2 o'clock line them up. Put your belt on, sometimes you have to turn the crank counter clockwise one or two notches then put the belt on and turn it make clockwise to get all the slack out of the belt. This should get it right in time.

Adjusting the timing on 1988 firefly

Slack in the timing chain. Some of these car came with a fibergear set instead of a metal gear set. You will have to pull the water, then the timimg chain cover. You wil have to replace the top & bottom gear on the motor, plus the new chain. This usually will come in a set. You will also need a time gear cover set, gasket kit.There are 2-marks to line up on these two gears to set your time with, (timing marks).
