There are a couple of ways to do the same thing for checking this. Some will turn the crankshaft with a breaker bar and see if there is a delay for the distributor rotor to move. Others will simply grab the distributor rotor and see if there appears to be play in the timing chain by rocking the rotor forward and in reverse.

Since the breaker plate will move with the points, do not confuse the breaker plate movement with the shaft stem movement.

There is a lot of room for error. The gears on the camshaft and/or the distributor gear can be worn and the timing chain can be fine. Sometimes the spring pin holding the gear on the distributor can be worn. Any of these can cause timing differences.

The Distributors can be checked but it takes a machine that is almost extinct in today's repair shops.

I mostly use the crankshaft method, forwards and backwards to see if the distributor rotor follows my actions on the crankshaft.

Please rate my info.

6-300 timing gear mark alignment

  1. Drain the cooling system and remove the front cover.

CAUTION When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  1. Crank the engine until the timing marks on the camshaft and crankshaft gears are aligned.
  2. Use a gear puller to removal both of the timing gears.
  3. Before installing the timing gears, be sure that the key and spacer are properly installed. Align the gear key way with the key and install the gear on the camshaft. Be sure that the timing marks line up on the camshaft and the crankshaft gears and install the crankshaft gear.
  4. Install the front cover, and assemble the rest of the engine in the reverse order of disassembly. Fill the cooling system.

Will a 86 motor swap into a 93 f150

The motor might with some modifications, a big difference in years and systems, though both are OBD-1. Not even sure the '86 is injected, or is it carbureted? Better off looking for an engine nearer to your '93. There could be multiple issues with sensors and their wiring between the two. Don't use shortcuts, scope it all out beforehand, or you could wind up with a half finished '93 with a forlorn "pond jumper for sale" in your driveway. good luck, Craig.

Ford f150 1986

The firing order for the 4.9 L engine is 1-5-3-6-2-4, with the firing order rotation on the distributor cap going clockwise. For the 5.0 & 7.5 L engines, the order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8, and the 5.8 L engine is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. On all three of these engines, the distributor cap firing rotation is counterclockwise. Also, on the six cylinder 4.9 L engine, the cylinders are in a "straight six", with #1 cylinder starting in front, and going in order straight back to #6. The eight cylinder engines' cylinders all fire in order also, (standing in front of the vehicle looking back towards the firewall) with #1 being front on your left and going straight back to #4, and then #5 being at front right, going straight back to #8, with the distributor being front and center. Hope this helps you out.
