I need to remove the rear door's panel to fix the outside handle. It opens from the inside just fine. I can pull the plastic panel away a bit, but I'm afraid I'll break something if I pull harder! The handle jams on the outside when it's pulled. Mine is a 2000.

You'll need to remove screws that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. If needed, you can pull back the weather seal (can't reuse it, but it's not that important) and you will be able to access everything inside the door

If there is not a screw in the center of the handle, then you have to press in on the panel in order to reveal the retaining spring behind the handle. It will be some sort of C clip that you need to extract with a hook.

You will need to remove the interior door panel and inspect the linkages. The offending rod should be obvious and loose.

Need to remove inner rear passenger side door

On the inside trim, you can remove screws (these screws may be covered by filler pieces or may be visible, or they may require you pry a plastic piece off that covers the screws) that are by the door handle, arm rest, under door and side of door and then gently pull back on the panel as there will also be retaining clips attached and you don't want to break them. You'll need to lift the door panel upwards in order to get it off the window ledge. Then you'll need to manipulate the panel and disconnect the door handle linkage from the door handle and disconnect the wiring for your controls. Then you need to pull back the weather seal and then you can access the bolts securing the outer handle

Remove door panel on a Ford Van

For a 1999 Ford Econoline 150 (assume the same or very similar), remove triangular plastic cover over mirror assembly by prying straight out, remove plastic door handle cover by prying up from the front side, remove electronic door switches by prying up from back side, remove round plastic cover at bottom rear of door panel. Four screws are now revealed, remove them. Lift door panel straight up, clips are hooks (not snap in). Work door switch assembly out of door panel. Set door panel aside. Reassemble in reverse order.
