Question about 1999 Chevrolet Corvette

Tail lights and instument panel lights will not come on

My 1999 Corvette's instrument panel lights, as well as my tail lights will not turn on when I turn on my headlights on. If I continue driving they have eventually turned on. It acts as if a wire is loose but I can't seem to find a solution. I have the same EXACT problem with my 1999 Corvette. The crazy thing is that the instrument panel lights come on when I open the door, but not when I turn on my headlights.

ARGGHHH!

Turns out my problem is not exactly the same. My instrument lights work fine when the door is open, but my tailights will not come on under any circumstances. They are not intermittent... just off.

I paid the $9.95 for official response... hopefully someone will know something about the relays that run this stuff.

I appreciate the attempts to help, but no one has understood the problem; my fault in the description. Two problems:
    1) Taillamps will not come on at all, ever. They are not intermittent... just off. The fuse is good (I replaced it to be sure).
    2) Instrument Panel lights come on when I open the car door (parked), BUT they will not come on when I turn on the lights at night. The brightness adjustment knob does nothing (except when I turn it all the way clockwise and click the interior lights on... but the panel lights still do not come on when I do that.)
Thanks to all for trying to help!

My toyota 4 runner's left brake light will not illuminate when applied if I have the headlights on. I checked the left rear bulb and assembly.

Hi Do you have the repair manual for this car ?
It should have the circuit diagram of the whole car.
Neways, the problem seems to be with the headlight switch circuit.
If you can open it up and check if the switch and the connections are fine.
I think its little tough to remove it. You need to be careful with the Airbag on the steering.

Solution to problem 1
Check the brake light switch on the brake pedal linkage, because if it is not supplying 12-volts to the brake lights, the result would be the problems you describe.....

Welcome to Fixya! Unlike the Ford Guy's, I only know GM cause they are Better! There are Relays for the Tail Light and the Dash Lights Seperate. Look in the Fuse Relay Box under the Hood. These Should both be Under there and will be Labeled. "Brake L" and "Illumination" Let me know what you find so if need be we can go Further!

I am not familiar with GM products, but Ford uses a lighting control module that controls all of the interior & exterior lighting. I owuld see if your corvette does too. They are expensive (@ $500). They have printed circuit boards with relays and a lot of sophisticated electronics and they control the anit theft system, illuminated entry, interior lights, horn fucntion, headlights, tail lamps, 4 way flashers, turn signals, etc.
The reason your Ip lights come on when you open the door is that the door swtich sends a signal to the controller turning on the interior lights for about 30 seconds. Usually, when the key is turnd to "on", the inside lights go out. good luck.

check your owner manual for the location of the fuse panel and what circuits they protect. If no fuses are blown, call your chevy delaer parts department and ask if your car has a lighting control module and if ti fails a lot for this problem.

Sounds like you have a fuse out in your control panel. Look inside your owners manual and locate the fuse panel, check the fuses and replace.

Tail lights don't work on 1998 Chevy Silverado.

check the wiring from the tailights back to the fuse panel, it sounds like an open connection. if i recall correctly check under the dash on the drivers side near the fuse panel for a bunch of wires in a bundle and look carefully for a wire or two that are cut/shorted/or seperated, you can also check under the drivers side kick panel by the hood release.

Fuse keeps blowing for my tail/instrumnet lights '98 ford escort

Here is an easy start. Start unplugging things. Start with the tail lights. 1 then the other. Then unplug the instrument lights then maybe the switch itself. after that its gonna be a matter of pulling trim panels to find the culprit (dashes and kick panels are common areas for this to happen). There is also another means too. when you unplug the item in question you can use a Ohmeter and use the black to a known ground then you can start touching wires to see which one has no resistance to ground. then you will need to trace that wire which can be a pain. As you can see this can get progressively worse as time goes on, but be patient and methodical and you'll get it figured out soon enough!

Sincerely

JC

I had the same problem. The local collector Corvette dealer ("Fairly Reliable Bob's" is their name, and I am not joking.) told me they see it all the time and that it is due to a faulty turn signal sub-assembly.
