No heat in 1998 Olds Intrigue (daughters car). Please help ASAP!!

No heat or defrost. Service Engine light is on. Motor is at normal operating temp. Does not blow heat at all. Does blow cold air though. Have replaced thermostat already. Heater core is not leaking No radiator stop leak has been used to our knowledge. Is there a Inline solenoid that we should check and how? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!

The coolant level was checked. Also noticed with speeds over 65mph that I can feel some heat from vents on dash but as soon as I slow down below 60mph there is nothing but cold air coming from vents.

The thermostat was replaced new. I have not checked the fuses. Good idea and will do that.

  • leskoracing_ Jan 21, 2009

I checked under hood relay center. The maxi-fuses look good and the 30&40 amp fuses are ok. I pulled relays also, they were not burned out. Do I check for continuity and how?

Thank you for all the help. Someone had mixed the green and orange antifreeze and clogged the heater core. We flushed the system and refilled properly and the heat is working. Thanks again.

It sounds like a thermostat.... $100-$150 repair shop.........$20 part if you do it yourself !
Go to an auto parts store and have them read your codes to determine why the Check Engine Light is on and to confirm any problems. Advanced Auto Parts will usually do this for free!
Did you check the fuses usually located under the dash on the drivers side or under the hood?

I have a '98 Olds Silhouette cooling fans work when A/C is on but will not come on even when temp is above normal operating temp if A/C is off

Just saw your second posting, so the temp is still above normal. Could the sensor
that controls the fan be not reading the heat properly ? The antifreeze/coolant
issue could still be relevant, so I will re-post that info. Tho.
Electric cooling fans will sometimes come on after a vehicle is parked,
(It actually heats up when stopped), but not when it is rolling down the road
because the movement is applying some cooling effect to the engine.
\
If the engine is not actually overheating, then the fans may be working
normally. Also, make sure your water/antifreeze mix is correct by using a
specific gravity tester. It is a tube with 4 or 5 balls, some of which will float
to give you a reading. Contrary to popular belief, More is not better when it
comes to antifreeze/coolant. It needs water to work properly. Too strong a
mix will actually make your vehicle run cold so that the temp sensors and
heater will not function properly. The engine will not achieve proper operating
temperature and may actually damage some of the components by running
it cold, affect timing, spark, etc. This could also cause the symptoms you
describe. The engine would not actually reach the proper heat threshold
until you added the extra demand of the AC heat transfer. But the first criteria
would be whether the engine is actually overheating / or in normal range .
It may be that the colder weather is allowing the sensors to come on a little
later, warming the engine and heater components a bit more than they would
in warmer weather. Would be good to know what the actual coolant temp is.
Could check that with a guage, and also check to see what temp thermostat
you are using. 195 degrees in the winter would be better, 165/180 or so in the
warmer months

I have 98 olds intrigue and the temp gage reads normal not hot but the light comes on so i look under the hood nothing hot except the top of the ac unit and its not even on

Hello, Under the hood and look around the intake manifold/plenum. There should be square nut senor, and 5/8" wrench would probably remove the sensor. This sensor has just one wire plug into it. The sensor is thermal switch which activated at an certain temperature, example: 250 degree F.
It just a switch. Find this send and remove the wire, see if this doesn't turn off the idiot temp light off. GB..stewbison

LIGHTS AND BLOWER FLASH ON/OFF

I had the flashing lights problem all last winter. In warm weather it doesn't happen, and the lights stay on when in manual mode.Rear defrost and cruise control quit working, and toggling rear defrost when headlights were on automatic turned them on and off.
Alternator was replaced 5 years ago. Olds dealer fixed a stalling and lights off and dimming problem by repairing 4 corroded grounding straps under the hood.
New mechanic is looking into the new problem, which I suspect began when I had a power steering hose leak that corrupted the grounds. Sometimes the climate control, heat and A/C quit entirely. Very bad in winter!
Other problems with 150K miles include new window operating switch, driver's side, service engine light going on at the same spot on my commute every day, and going off at lower altitude, and occasional rough shifting.
The motor burns oil, about a quart every 1500 miles, but no white smoke noticeable in back.
Motor runs great, and the car is tight and quiet.

I have a 1998 Olds Intrigue. Just had a tune up and replaced the upper intake manifold. Now I am getting a code that says the fuel is running too lean, Service Engine Light stays on. Also, When sitting...

Lean condition is a result of vacuum leaks, possibly at gaskets of upper manifold. You can check by spraying ether or carb cleaner at the gaskets with engine running. If engine revs at all, remove manifold to ensure gaskets properly installed.

Overheating: Make sure cable was reattached to temp sensor, and check for fan operation when engine gets hot.

You need a new wheel bearing, This also happened to my olds alero, make sure 2 jack up each tire 1 at a time and pull back and forth on them checking for play, once you have found the 1 that has play or wobbles that is the 1 that needs a new wheel bearing

Service engine soon light

The MIL light AKA service engine soon light comes on to warn of a malfunction in the emission control system or a problem with electronic engine controls like fuel control, there will be one or more trouble codes stored in the PCM (powertrain control module) to show what system or sensor has an issue/problem, take the car to any Kragen Auto, Auto Zone or other chain parts store and they will test it for free, write down the trouble code or code's and post them back on this same thread for me to look at, then we will have some info on what to fix to get the light to go out, also have them reset the light when they test it, it will come back on in a few days, but maybe we can fix it before then, OK?
