Question about 1996 Chevrolet Lumina Mini

Volts Light I started my car one morning and it wouldn't start and then i charged the batter and it started. I kept it running with out the battery charger then I turned it off then back on it started to i turned the car off so the battery can charge. I tried the same thing when the battery was charged and it wouldn't start. So i put the battery cahrger on the next day and let it charge for a while and took off the positive jumper cable off and it stayed on so i bought a new batter. My car starts now but the volts light is still on what else can be the problem. I have been told it could be the battery or altenator. Is this correct or could there be something else wrong because the volt light didn't turn off.

If the light is on the charging system is not charging properly.. it should be over 13v running the most likely reason is a bad alternator..

This is caused by the Alternator. Also, Check the Belt for Tightness.

2.2 motor. Where is the fuse link for the charging system located?

the fuse is ok as you have a reading on the gauge
the problem is in the alternator or regulator or battery
charge lights work from a positive and a negative current flow
when you turn the key on the current flows in one direction through the light to the alternator and so it lights up
when the engine is running the alternator is charging ( normally at a higher voltage than the battery and so a current is directed back through the light to the battery
these two opposing currents mean that there is no current flow through the light and so it goes out
however if the batter has failed ( 9 volts is a good indication ) then the 14.5 volts will will produce a current back through the bulb and it will again light up
I would have the battery load tested as it may have an internal fault and not accept the charge from the alternator

Hi again just got a new battery, battery light is still on car is starting, but now whats the problem

The BATTERY light indicates that your battery is not getting charged. There could be several reasons for this most probably your alternator, which generates the current to charge the battery when the engine is running. If the new battery is not getting charged, it will eventually drain not start your car. To confirm that the battery is not getting charged and that is the reason for the BATTERY light, put a volt meter across the battery while the engine is running. It should read around 13 volts indicating that current is flowing into the battery. If it reads 11 volts or less, that means the batter is being drained and not charged. Then have your alternator checked.G

I used my automatic start this morning and the car would start for 10 seconds and then shut off and then do start and shut off over and over. I started it normally and it worked but then the check...

Automatic start never works well because if you have moisture on the plugs or wires, you need to give it more gas to keep it running then the automatic system is set for. As long as it works manually, I would just use that until the weather gets better. Charging system light has nothing to do with the batter, but all that drain on the battery could have really put a strain on the alternator. Don't keep starting a car remotely if it is not going to work. Check the alternator output with a voltmeter, for over 14 volts when reved slightly.

Crank sensor

During the night or after the car sets for a while. The battery voltage will drop from the normal 13.6 to 13.8 volts when running and Charging, to between 12.3 to 12.6 volts. If the Crank Sensor is going bad, it may not operate correctly with the lower voltage. Check your Battery Voltage in the morning with a Volt Meter. If the Battery Voltage is lower than about 12.3 to 12.5 volts. You may need a new battery. Try leaving the battery on a low current Battery Maintainer overnight and see if it starts in the morning. I have seen many cars that shut down with Low Battery Voltage. Darn these New Fangled Cars and their Computers! FYI, we have never seen a Crank Sensor fail in this manner..... Check the RESTING Battery Voltage.

check battery volts should be 12.6 volts.if not battery dead.have battery charged and test if battery can be charged alternator faulty.if battery dead cant be charged replace battery.and clean battery cables if EPC warning light still flash have vechicle code scan for faulty accelerator control system or mass air flow sensor.to get vechicle started after replacing battery just turn ignition switch to the on position for 30 seconds then turn off ignition switch then start engine.

Battery warning light was on this morning , and for several miles altrnated between being on and off. After several miles it got dimmer and finally turned off. Car seemed to run all right though.

Replace the battery. The batter is on it's last leg and is about to die. The reason the light went off is because as you drive, the alternator provides charge to the battery. So the further you go, the more charged the battery becomes. That said, if the Battery warning light was on when you started the car, and you had not left any interior lights on over night, then the battery is losing charge rapidly or is not holding a charge.

Charging stystem seems to be working..... But when ever the miss's gets inthe car to go to work, she will get 10 miles and the battery light will start flashing, then get solid and she will lose the head...

When this happens, are the gauges dropping or not working properly or at all? Check the alternator. May not be charging so everything is running off the battery. The battery is used mostly for starting, but the alternator recharges the battery, so if after driving for a short while, and alternator not charging, everything electrical will drain the battery. You can sometimes drive the car for a while when this happens, or if the alternator goes out completely, the car will not run at all.
