You need to trace down the vacuum leak and stop it so it can lower the rpms on the car.

the best i can tell you to do is to take it to a shop and have them track it down for you.i dont know of any online sites that specialize in diagrams of engines other than a chiltons book. you can buy that at the autoparts store...if it were me id take it to a shop they can usually find a leak in about 20 minutes or less.

My idle rises and falls in a steady pattern in my 1990 Geo tracker

Hi Connor,
It sounds like you have a vacuum leak somewhere and the pcm (power-train control module) is trying to compensate, you may also hear a hissing noise when the idle fluctuates, that would be a vacuum leak. If your check engine light is on, have the code pulled and it may point you in the right direction.

High idle and surging

You need to check for a vacuum leak. If it is a big leak, you can usually hear them. If it is a smaller leak, you can usually find them by spraying carb cleaner around the vacuum hoses and listen for the idle to climb. If the rpms go up then there is a leak.

It wont idle down to the proper rpms

The most common causes for this is either a stuck idle air control or a vacuum leak. The idle air control is in the throttle body and adjusts the amount of air that the engine gets at idle.

Have a 99 Saturn, rough idles, stalls, high RPMs when first started, then idles to rough idle, what is the first thing I check?

Sounds like the EGR is hanging open causing an internal vacuum leak.... Check all vacuum lines first for cracks / splits and then pull the EGR and make sure the pintle is not stuck open with a chunk of carbon.

I have a 1999 mercury villager that has a slight misfire P303

First clean the MAF sensor with carb cleaner several times with spray.

Then spray short bursts around intake manifold connections to see if idle flares up. That is where leak is.
