Question about 1997 Mercury Sable

1997 Mercury Sable Misfire

My sister-in-law has a 1997 Mercury Sable with OHV 3.0L engine and has a persistent misfirer code for cyls. 1&2. The boots for both plugs were burned up so new plugs and wires were installed. The engine now runs better (a little rough at idle, fine otherwise) but the misfire code keeps coming back. Not to mention the previous owner had removed the MIL lamp (rather than change the bad wires). And I have no idea how long the car was driven like this. Any input would be appreciated

The car has 90K, and we did put Techron in the tank a couple of months ago. I listened to the injectors and only no. 1 sounds weak, the rest sound strong. The shop insists the compression was tested with the back three around 60# but the front at 120# each(I doubt it since this involves removing the plugs and testing each cylinder, and they didn't charge for the service).

I do know the difference, we just put the stuff in the tank, really just for the heck of it. If the power cleaning can do the job, I would try that before changing any injectors. I have a compression tester, and will do a proper test, when the temp. outside climbs into the 50's. Probably in a month or so. I'm just planning for the next move. Oil usage seems normal, and listening at the tailpipe doesn't sound like any serious miss, at least not related to internal wear or damage like valves or rings. I'm betting cleaning the injectors, and maybe removing carbon from the cylinders because of the bad plug wires may be the underlying cause.

how many miles? have u had the fuel injectors pressure cleaned, only the dealer can do his, it works, have cleared many rough runs and outright misses with factory injector cleaning setup, the outside shops often just dump cleaner in the gas tank, that doesn't work

They may have done a relative compression test which is done electronically by measuring the RPM drop of each cylinder when the test is running, but not sure anyone but the dealer can do this test. This low compression you mentioned is not good, suggest u run the test yourself, the compression test guage kits are cheap u can buy them on line for about $25 US, also tank added chemicals don't do anything in the short term and noting if the injector is badly clogged, do u understand what I mean about a high pressure factory cleaning? it is quite a different animal.

Cylinder 1 misfire detectedrich or lean air/fuel mixture fuel injecter fault and faulty crank shaft sensor

Wow... Thats a lot of diagnostic codes. First... The cyl #1 misfire will cause the Engine to run rich giving you a rich running engine. Therefore the rich lean code. This misfire on cyl #1 can also throw a crankshaft sensor code as it will slow down engine rpm. I would change the spark plug and ignition coil to cyl#1 and have the codes erased and see if that solves the problem. If not, you then need to persue any codes that may reappear.

Engine Code 301

Code # 301??? That is NOT a valid Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) for the engine control system on a 2000 Mercury Sable.

Assuming that you mean P0301, that is a cylinder misfire code that is identifying number 3 cylinder as the cylinder with the misfire problem. MANY things can cause a cylinder to misfire including spark plugs, spark plug wires or boots, burnt valves, broken valve springs, blow head gaskets, cracked cylinder heads, bad or dirty injectors, faulty injector control circuits, Failed ignition coils...the list goes on....proper diagnosis required.

- Intake air leak

- Perform Injector Service
- Replaced Spark Plug #1
- Replaced Injector #1
- Replaced Ignition Coil #1
