Question about 2004 Ford F350

2004 f350 6.lt diesel wont stay running.

This truck will drain the battery to start so I try to rev the engine to keep it runing but it dies.
I cheked the fuel and it is getting to the second fuel filter fine..
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

CHECK THE WIRES AT THE FRONT OF PASSENGER SIDE VALVE COVER THERE IS A ALUMINUM BOX THERE. SHAKE THE WIRES IF IDLE CHANGES YOU KNOW THE PROBLEM. I SPRAYED MINE WITH SILICONE AND I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS SINCE.

I assume you have checked the oil for proper level? They cant be low or the thing wont start as oil is needed to fire the fuel injectors. Your gone to really have to have a scan tool that can read the oil pressure off the high presure pump. The thing will have to have about 700psi ICP pressure anything less and it will not start. You could still have a HI psi oil leak under one of the valve covers, or at the hi psi pump snap together fitting. If its big enough leak it can cause no start or symptom you are describing. Unfortunatly its complicated to find you need a scan tool, special test fitting so you can air check the hi psi oil system and listen for leaks, it can come from eithe valve cover area or under the hi psi pump.

if I'm reading this right...
... the engine starts and dies within a few seconds.
... you jumpered the fuel pump test connector and it will keep running.
... you smell fuel after trying to re-start when it dies.

Disconnect the plug to the cold start injector. Even if you have an issue with the engine running then dying after a few seconds after doing this, if you don't smell fuel after disconnecting the cold start injector and try to restart it, the cold start time injector time switch may be failing.

Buy a can of starting fluid and have someone start the engine then spray short bursts of the fluid around all the intake fittings. If spraying the fluid in any particular area keeps the engine running, I'd start looking for leaks around that area.


It does sound like an AFM or COR issue considering it dies after a few seconds, but the fuel smell when trying to restart the engine may be a separate issue that needs corrected / isolated first.it will keep running.

Still sounds fuel related to me. Getting minimal fuel enough to start & or rev, but not maintaining proper pressure required. Try this. Get a can of WD-40 ready, remove air intake hose at throttle body. Start car & when it starts to begin to die, spray some WD-40 into front of throttle body & see if engine continues to run, as long as you keep giving it squirts of 1-2 seconds. If it does, change fuel filter first, but be prepared to do pump too. If you can get a fuel pressure test done on it, that would be even better. Let me know what happens.

Car will start then die after a second


Are you certain that its a fuel delivery problem? Since it DOES start and then Dies...i would look into "Cold Starting" problems.. Like a Coolant Temperature Sensor -- it acts like a choke for these newer cars. Next time you start it...rev the engine and try to keep it running for a few minutes.....see if it stays running after you get the engine warmed up....if it DOES stay running...then thats the problem. Otherwise try to get the trouble codes from the OBD2. you can usually rent or borrow them from your local Auto parts stores. Keep me posted and i can help you figure this one out.

I Have a 1999 blazer that starts but motor dies right away.


Check the fuel delivery, first. It could be fuel pump or an obstruction. The best way is to start the car in park, then run over to the engine compartment and rev up the throttle. Keep idle higher than normal. If it wants to die, rev throttle higher to compensate. If it makes no difference, verify fuel pressure when engine dies. Usually ignition related wont even allow the car to start. Any service engine indication?

99 volkswagen passat starts, then stalls, won't keep idle


I am having a similar problem on a 2003 Volkswagon Passat 1.8L 4 cylinder manual engine. My batter (after 10 years of service) died about a month ago. When the engine is cold and I start it up the engine (if I do not carefully add gas to rev the engine) will idle at around 200 to 400 RPM and then stall. The problem does not occur after the engine has been going for more than about 90 seconds. No check engine light is on. Ideas anyone?
