best way to try this is by following

  1. go to an open rood where you can do 100kph (60mhp)
  2. have your overdrive turned off (there should be a light on the dash board that comes on)
  3. then turn over drive on and see if the RPM drops
if it dose not work let me know and i will try my best to help you

SOURCE: I Keep Getting A P171 Code on my 1997 Ford Ranger

Code 171 is, "too lean", it could be as simple as a dirty fuel filter. If you already tried that then it's most likely the intake gasket is leaking. The O-rings get old and hard and don't seal so the engine is sucking in air where it shouldn't be. This is a common problem with those vehicles it's not too bad of a job to fix, I think Ford offers an update kit for less than $100.

Does a 1987 Ford Ranger 2.9 V6 4WD have a camshaft sensor? If so, approximately where is it located?

If you want to word it that way, it's inside the distributor. It's also called a pip sensor. It sends a signal to tfi module.

What is the specific ignition control module number for a 4-cylinder, 2.3 liter Ford Ranger?

I recommened only the factory part for this. You can buy it from most full service part stores and not just the Ford dealer. The part is
MOTORCRAFT Part # DY959 [ICM] (Ignition control module) $176.79
You can also mail order it from a site I use called rockauto.com the price given above is from that site.

Turns over , gas to carb but no spark? replaced coil. 1982 Ford 2.3 liter engine

1980's Fords were notorious for the "Thick Film Ignition" (TFI) modules going bad. They were so bad in fact, that there was a class-action law suit filed against Ford for this issue. If you are sure that your distributor cap, rotor and wires are in good condition, then I would try replacing the TFI module. It is screwed to the side of the distributor. A special socket tool can be purchaced at your local parts supplier for this purpose. The screws go way inside the body of the TFI module and standard sockets will not fit into the hole far enough to get onto the head of the screw. It is not real expensive. You are looking at maybe less than $80 for the TFI module and the tool to install it with.

Check to see if the rotor button is turning, that will tell you if the timing belt is broke or not, also, the ignition module tfi module is most likely the problem if the timing belt is not broke.

Does it have a TFI module on the distributor. A local parts store should be able to test that for you.
