SOURCE: 89 Ranger 2.9L 150k mi. Lifter noise, power lose, oil pres zero

the lifter noise might have been a bearing going bad or a piston ring. if you lost power you probably lost compression on one cylinder. Try checking your compression with a compression tester screwed into your spark plug socket. here is a site with a procedure.

SOURCE: engine seems to miss / sputter between 30 mph and

Hi Nascar2nd.
From what you are describing it appears like an engine misfire.
These trucks are notorious for bad ignition coils.
They don't always set a code either, it depends on several factors.
To check these out in my shop there is a mode in our scan tool called "mode 6". This allows us to look at certain engine data parameters to look at misfire to locate the offending cylinder(s).
Unfortunately without the use of a scan tool you will not be able to see this.
It may be in your best interests to get a shop to look at this for you and verify the bad cylinder.
I have had issues with aftermarket coils and use Ford originals exclusively now. They have also reduced the price of them, good thing too because we go through many.
Might be an opportune time to replace spark plugs as well. worn spark plugs can accelerate coil failure as a worn plug takes more energy to fire.
Thank you for using FixYa !

89 ranger wont start. tried either and it backfires and catches of fire at breather. is it a timing problem. was running and dieded

Due to the age of the vehicle or milage on the engine, it more than likely has a worn timing chain that needs replacement. Have you changed any of the ignition wires lately? They may be on incorrectly or are old with too much resistance. Use an ohms meter to check this. Good luck!

Engine misfire, only when it snows

Have you or the dealers checked the plug wires? Often when there is high humidty weak plug wires can cause the engine to miss and this is difficult to diagnose in a shop environment. Modern ignition systems have very high voltage and also worn plugs can cause the voltage to spike. This would let the weak plug wires lose the voltage and cause the engine to miss.
