Replaced alternator and battery still showing low/varying voltage

I jsut replaced my alternator and battery and my car still shows low./varying voltage on my gage in the dash. when i put up the windows my volts drop by 2 and when i get on the gas the voltage goes down as the rpm goes up. sometimes the car works almost perfect but most of the time i have this issue sometimes it gets so bad that i can not drive the car because it gets down around 8 volts and almost dies. im almost about to give up any ideas would be great

a couple things at first... one recheck the wiring and confirm the routing and the tension on the belt. as that is a fairly old car (as cars go) are you aware if it has a seperate voltage regulator... often mounted on one of the fender wells or the firewall as that would be a good condidate for replacement.

Check all of your grounds from the battery, the one to the starter or the one to the frame may be corroded or bad

It soundls like you have a high powered sound system and you might have to step up to a higher amp alternator, that will give you enough power. Your battery should be fine too. Try to find out if the voltage regulator is built into the alternator and if not ask to find out where it is on the car and replace that to.

Check the battery ground cable and make sure that you have a good engine ground.to do this you need to use a voltmeter and check for voltage drop between the battery terminal and engine it should not be more 0.4 volts .if that is o.k. the alternator internal voltage regulator is not good and replce the alternator again.also make sure the drive belt is tight.

Check the idle rpm (efi around 900 rpm ) carby around 750-800rpm. Very few alternators charge under 750 rpm as it requires 14 volts to charge the battery and at low revs the alternator will be producing around 11.5-12 volts. Check tension and condition of drive belt.

Battery light goes on and off

Your running the alternator on borrowed time as its a matter of time before the battery dies and needs replacement along with the old alternator. The light is indicating something wrong with the electrical system. A simple test at your favorite auto store capable of checking the battery/alternator system will reveal what's wrong or you can perform some simple measurements of battery voltage to determine the issues - the alternator is due for replacement and possibly the battery if it was allowed to operate with the battery light going on and off for a long time otherwise the alternator is on its last legs unless you can find loose connections on the alternator.

Usually alternators wear out; the brushes wear down after so many thousands of miles where they begin to lose physical contact and intermittently turn on the low voltage indicator warning you of electrical power problems. Measuring at the battery terminals should show battery voltage around 12.5v+, engine idling 13.5v+, above idling 14.3v+. If the last two voltages don't vary above battery voltage then the alternator is faulty. Remove it for testing before replacement. With so many miles on it, its due for replacement.

voltage at battery, car off. shoud be at least 12.6 volts. when running if all belts are ok it should read at least 14.2 to 14.7 if alternator and curcuit are ok. if voltage is less than above replace alternator. because it has the voltage regulator on inside of alt. good-day!

Was the light on before you changed the alternator? Check a couple of things: Check the connections if one is loose you may be running mainly off the battery but still show it's charging. Have you checked the battery under a load? Try checking the battery voltage with the car off and turning on the headlights. What does it read? 12.2 sounds like you may have a dead cell or if you have a bad connection you may be draining it. Sometimes a battery may show correct voltage but when load is applied it drops like a rock. if this happens replace the battery. Did the idle change when you changed the alternator or has it always been low?

You can isolate the new alternator by starting the car and disconnecting the negative battery cable with engine running. Now measure the voltage at the positive terminal to a ground. This will be your alternator voltage under normal load (w/o battery). It should be 14-15 VDC and closer to 15 if it's new. If not, return the new alternator and try again. If the voltage is normal, try touching the negative cable back to the battery terminal and see if it takes it back to 13. If yes, maybe your battery has an internal short.

Battery went dead while engine was running

Get your alternator checked out or just replace it. sounds like the alternator is not charging the battery on your vehicle. You can take it out and take it to a local kragen or autozone and they will test it for free to see if it is good or not
