That sound is the Compressor. I would get it Checked out. The Window Problem is Either a Fuse or a Relay that is Bad. The Relays are under the Hood in the Fuse Distribution Box. The Diagram for these is inside the Cover.

My neighbor's 1998 Cavalier is making a strange noise. It has automatic transmission, new tires, and 155,000 miles. When idling at a stop, it sounds fine, but when it starts movig and hits 15 or 20 mph...

Try getting on an open road, get up to about 45 MPH or where ever the noise is loudest. Put the car in neutral and turn the engine off. You can roll in a straight line for a long time. Make sure nodody is around you. If the sound stops when the engine is off, then the noise is coming from the motor. If the sound is still there, its got to be coming from the tires. Id guess a wheel bearing.

Have a steady growl up front at hiway speeds.cv boots are not cracked and no clicking.what else could this be.brakes are good

More then likely wheel bearings. Make sure you check rear wheel bearings too. Noise travels very easily in the Cavalier. I had rear wheel bearings bad but sounded like front ones.

2000 Chevy Cavalier making a noise when air is shut off

This problem sounds like the aircompressor pully, the bearing is shot.
With the engine running and the air conditioner off there is a grinding noise, look at the compressor pully, does it wobble? Then turn on the air conditioner and the noise stops, look at the compressor pully again, the wobble stops? If so that's the problem.

I have a 2000 z24 cavalier. When turning left and braking i get a wineing noise in the left front, then release the brake and still hear the noise for a little bit . sounds like power steering pump. but...

sounds like a wheel bearing,. jack the car up and check for play in the wheel by moving it back and forth. the wheel should feel tight and only move with the steering system

Front End Noise, Chev Cavalier

It sounds like you have a bad c v or constant velocity joint. Look under the car next to the wheel look for a rubber accordian type unit, if the rubber is torn or lose the grease has escaped and damaged the joint. You can replace it yourself, but if your not mechanically inclined would say take it to a shop.

You need to pin down where the noise is coming from. It sounds like a pump, but cant be sure.

1998 Chevrolet cavalier 2.4 L starter motor noisy

Hello there! More than than likely an acessory going bad, the little bit of extra load on the engine puts load on it, making the noise stop. If possible take sound clip or video clip with sound. Also look at the belt tensioner and see if its jumping around.
