Question about 1998 Volkswagen Beetle

1 Answer

My odometer stopped working on my 1998 beetle

I purchased the car used with 74245mi. When I went to get gas I reset the trip and noticed after 38.1 miles it wasn't changing anymore and my odometer didn't move any more either. Any ideas why?
Thanks

I would check the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission. Best wishes to you.

You dont have to remove trans. to access the gear. It's very easy to replace it, just remove the passengers side cv shaft, remove the flange, then remove the cap lock{10mm) bolt, unscrew the cap and count how many turns, then you need a special tool to remove/install the bearing. I hope this will get you going.

By the way I was getting ahead of myself. I was talking about the driven gear inside your transaxle. This gear is what turns your speed sensor. Sorry! Got carried away.

Woops, Drive Gear ( not driven ). I'm tired. Think I will go to bed now. It is 4:21 am.

My speedometer and heated seats stopped working when we changed the blower switch in my 1998 vw beetle

Sounds like you unplug tge wiring harness or broke the speedometer cable. Id leave more towards an unplugged harness.

I have a 1998 Pontiac bonneville se with 218k miles on it. Tachometer works fine. Speedometer works fine. Odometer works fine. Gas gauge, oil pressure, battery, and temp gauges are all fine. Trip meter...

If I had a 1998 car with 218K miles on it and an unimportant thing like the trip meter didn't work I would put a piece of black tape over it and use a GPS as my trip meter.

Just got my 2000 VW New Beetle with 3/4 tank of gas. Drove it 36 miles and its below 1/2 tank. Could it be the gas that they put in? Or something wrong with the car itself?

On just about every vehicle I have ever seen, the fuel gauge will move faster from 1/2 to 1/4 (I never let a tank run past 1/4. Bad for the fuel pump) than from full to 3/4 or 3/4 to 1/2.
Do a mileage check. Fill the tank until the pump stops, reset your trip or note your odometer miles. Dive a few days or a number of miles. Fill the tank again until the pump stops and not the amont it took to fill. Note the number of miles you put on and do the math.

I just had a new battery installed yesterday and this morning there is a message appearing on my dash board >>> TRIP B 199999????????

There should be a peg or reset button next to the odometer. Pessimism and hold for 5 second or so. It should re.set to zero. Your car has two resettable odometers Trip A and Trip B. They can be used to measure the distance of a trip. I normally reset A each time I fill the gas tank and B each time I get an oil change. Nothing to worry about. You can cycle through the three odometers by pressing the reset peg for 1 second or less. The third odometer view is the total miles on the car and cannot be reset.

Odometer stopped working

IF YOUR SPEEDO IS WORKING THEN YOUR VSS IS OKAY, BAD VSS WILL STOP SPEEDO AND USALLY CAUSE HARD SHIFTING. NORMALLY ODO IS CONTROLLED BY SERVO MOTOR WHICH MAY HAVE WENT OUT. CHECK EBAY FOR REPAIR SERVICES OR SIMPLY GET A SALVAGE CLUSTER AND HAVE MILEAGE RESET

Odometer and trip odometer stopped working. Speedometer works.

The problem is going to be a worn or broken odometer gear. You can purchase the gear at odometergears.com for $29.00 with the shipping. Follow their how to repair on the Mustang to help in the repair. I believe you will have just the worm gear to replace.
