I purchased the car used with 74245mi. When I went to get gas I reset the trip and noticed after 38.1 miles it wasn't changing anymore and my odometer didn't move any more either. Any ideas why?

I have a 96 Ford Explorer Sport and I noticed that the odometer and the Trip meter had stopped working. I pushed the Trip meter to 0 it out. When to town and I had not went even one mile. I had indeed went 22 miles. What caused it to stop?
On just about every vehicle I have ever seen, the fuel gauge will move faster from 1/2 to 1/4 (I never let a tank run past 1/4. Bad for the fuel pump) than from full to 3/4 or 3/4 to 1/2.
Do a mileage check. Fill the tank until the pump stops, reset your trip or note your odometer miles. Dive a few days or a number of miles. Fill the tank again until the pump stops and not the amont it took to fill. Note the number of miles you put on and do the math.
There should be a peg or reset button next to the odometer. Pessimism and hold for 5 second or so. It should re.set to zero.
Your car has two resettable odometers Trip A and Trip B. They can be used to measure the distance of a trip. I normally reset A each time I fill the gas tank and B each time I get an oil change.
Nothing to worry about.
You can cycle through the three odometers by pressing the reset peg for 1 second or less. The third odometer view is the total miles on the car and cannot be reset.
IF YOUR SPEEDO IS WORKING THEN YOUR VSS IS OKAY, BAD VSS WILL STOP SPEEDO AND USALLY CAUSE HARD SHIFTING. NORMALLY ODO IS CONTROLLED BY SERVO MOTOR WHICH MAY HAVE WENT OUT. CHECK EBAY FOR REPAIR SERVICES OR SIMPLY GET A SALVAGE CLUSTER AND HAVE MILEAGE RESET
