Question about 2004 Ford Focus

1 Answer

2004 ford focus will not go in gear manual transmission

The car starts and idles fine but will not go in any gear. There is tension on the clutch pedal and no leaking fluid from the cylindar located there (I had that problem before). When I move the shift knob it will go in a complete square and not catch any of the prongs for the gears. I have been searching trying to figure out what could be causing it and how to get it fixed. If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

With engine shut OFF, try putting it in any gear. While leaving it in a gear, press the clutch all the way and turn the key to start ( do NOT hold key to start, but just for a moment). If the car jerks forward while starter is engaged, you have a clutch problem. If the engine turns over freely, you have a shifting linkage issue.

SOURCE: Transmission fluid leaking from bell housing when in gear.

If you have never done this before,it may be best to take the truck to a shop or have some one with experience help you. You will need the truck up far enough to take out the transmission. The linkage and drive shaft has to be removed, then unbolt the transmission from the bell housing.Special tools may be needed to pull and replace the seal.
Transmission fluid needs to be changed since it is a brownish color.

SOURCE: stalls when put into gear

Its possible it could be other things causing the problem, but seeing as you've checked most of the likely causes, it is most likely your Torque-Converter. The lockup clutch in your Stator-Fan located inside the Torque-Converter could be siezed, causing the car to stall.

SOURCE: manual transmission takes effort to put in gear.

Have the clutch looked at. If the clutch is not releasing fully it makes shifting difficult. Have the trans fluid changed too, it isn't expensive and probably is listed under your maintanance in the owners manual

as do a clutch replacement

No gears at all. only done 20.000 miles, but brake resevoir very low as well

Is it a manual transmission (you mention gears)?

Are you sure the brake reservoir is low?

Some manual transmission clutches have fluid reservoirs similar to brake fluid reservoirs. If the clutch fluid gets low, the car will be difficult to shift.
