We have a 2003 dodge caravan? Our "heater" is only blowing out cold air, no matter how full the radiator is. It is using a lot of antifreeze, too, but we do not see any leaks anywhere when we stop som

Randy this might be a thermostat change this they are cheap but make sure u get a gasket. allso check your oil,if it looks like u have water in it thats where your rad antifreeze is going, blown head gasket.

Have you checked the coolant level? What you describe is exactly what happens if the coolant level is low. When stopped at idle, hot coolant is not circulating through the heater core, so no heat. As the engine increases in rpm's when you pull away from the light, the water pump is spinning quicker, and some coolant is making it to the heater core. So check the level, and if it is low, keep an eye on it to see if it drops again. That of course indicates a leak somewhere. Get it fixed, as overheating the engine leads to costly repairs and worse case a new engine. Let me know how you make out with this.

misty check the water level in the radiato...if it is low the last thing to get any water is the heater core..if low you will need to find the reason...like a water pump or headgasket leaking

SOURCE: Dodge 2002 Grand Caravan V6 3.3 engine overheating/no cabin heat.

Replace the bad radiator hose first.  Second- get you special formulated anti-freeze dye from the auto store and pour it into the radiator.  Third- make sure you got all the air pockets out of your system, cause the coolant system won't work with air pockets in it.  Fourth- Check for leaks by looking for the colored dye.  If it's not the radiator hose, then could possibly be a pin hole in your radiator.  Would suggest replacing all the radiator hoses at the same time while you got the coolant system disconnected, cause you don't want to have to come back and replace another hose in a few months.

If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing

  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.

  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

My 1999 caravan is blowing cold air


Check the water Coolant level in the coolant reservoir and also remove the radiator cap, which tends not to be on the radiator any more and check it is full. Also burp the system by removing air licks buy sqeezing the radiator hoses when the system is hot. Remove the radiator cap before you do this. You also need to check the thermostat for correct operation as it might be stuck closed. Remove it, put it in a pot of warm water put it on the stove and you should see it open before it comes to a simmer.

In cold weather heater will not blow warm air unless at idle stopped. when at highway speed blows cold air


check and make sure the radiator is full of antifreeze take off the radiator cap and top off the radiator then take your hand and cover the hole where the cap goes and squeeze the top radiator hose a few times to help it go down that way if there is a air pocket somewhere it will help push it out when you thank your done top off again and replace the cap and try

SOMEHOW I BELIEVE YOUR TWO INTAKE & RETURN HEATER HOSES THAT FEED THE HEATER CORE HAVE BEEN REVERSED. EITHER THAT OR a plugged heater core

Assuming the radiator is full of coolant, you are describing a faulty thermostat. The thermostat is closed when the engine is cold to restrict coolant flow until it warms up.
