Open Question

I have a 1994 Ford ranger, 3.0 v6, that won't keep a charge. I cleaned all the terminals, replaced the alternator, and replaced the battery. It still only runs if i boost it or charge the battery over night. The voltage gage in the cab reads approximately 9 volts when running. What could cause this and how do i go about fixing it?

change your battery cables and check all wires on the alternator for loose connections, expecially the grounds.

Are the connections really dirty at the voltage regulator? These tend to get corrosion on them and cause weird charging system issues. Also make sure the ground is good on the regulator.

you will get some funny answers from some of these "experts " The symptoms suggest to me with out much doubt that the regulator is not doing its job correctly ,consistently.Iwould take it to an AUTO ELECTRICIAN and get it tested in situ.... there is only 4 things it can be , wireing ---battery---alternator-----regulator and of those the reg. is the only one that chops and changes. it will cost little for a sparky to check the reg ,. AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE OUTCOME

ALTERNATOR DRIVE BELT SLIPPING OR BATTERY CABLES NEED REPLACING IF THEY ARE THE ORIGINAL ONES.THE VOLT GAUGE COULD BE FAULTY.TO TELL GET A DIGITAL VOLTMETER HOOK TO CAR BATTERY CRANK CAR UP.BATTERY VOLTAGE SHOULD BE 13.5 TO 14.5 VOLTS. WITH NEW CABLES. IF NOT CHECK ALTERNATOR FIELD WIRES FOR DAMAGE ALSO ALTERNATOR POSITIVE WIRE FOR DAMAGE.

94 ranger battery new alternator charging but wont crank


10 volts isn't good and if you have a weak connection, it won't turn it over. You should have 12+ from a good battery. Try cleaning the battery connections with a battery brush.

Alternator is not charging


Check all the connections to be sure the wires are in good condition. Check the battery terminals and make sure they are making good contact. Make sure none of the pins on the alternator are not bent and are lining up with the connectors. Be sure none of the wires are pulled out of the connectors. Use a Volt meter to check the voltage at the alternator and at the battery. It should be between 13.5 and 15 volts. Also check the grounds to the engine. I hope this help you locate the problem.

Like a dead batterie no power


make sure battery cables tight and clean if cables look badly corroded replace both battery cables clean battery terminals if all is good..have battery check should have 12.5 volts.if not battery need to be charged and checked.if battery can hold charge.have alternator tested.with engine idling alternator out put at battery should be 13.5 - 14.5 volts. if not alternator faulty.make sure drive belt not damaged or loose and belt tensioner working correctly keep tension on drive belt.if you have digital voltmeter you can check battery and alternator output.

I have a 2002 ford ranger that got a lot of water in the gas. I have drained the tank and added heat as well as replaced the filter. When I try to start it the battery gauge goes down to 0 and all I hear...


The alternator isn't charging , check B+ voltage hook-ups on the alternator . The heavy gage wire on the back of the alternator should have B+ voltage , vehicle not running . The fuel pump has nothing to do with it > terminal 3 at the connector should also have B+ voltage , So should terminal 1 . Charge the battery an get the vehicle running , put a volt meter on the battery post's , if there is about 13 to 14 volts running it is not charging !

Replaced altornator 3 times and wire to battery but still won't charge.


if you replaced alternator 3 times , have you had your battery tested ? if battery is bad usually that will cause alternator to keep going bad . try having battery tested . might just need a battery

System is not charging. Have replaced Altrenator and Starter. Both tested bad at parts store. Charging was intermittent at first but now not charging at all. With Engine running, remove Neg battery...


You need to check the pig tail that plugs to the rear of the alternator it could be burnt Ford had several problems with these pig tails .Thanks Klay

The battery has tested fine, the alternator is fine. But it won't start or hold a charge.


REPLACE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE.CHECK ALTERNATOR FUSE AND CHECK ALTERNATOR VOLTAGE REGULATOR WIRES FOR DAMAGE.HOOK VOLT METER TO BATTERY FEED WIRE MAKE SURE 12 VOLTS GETTING TO ALTERNATOR FEED WIRE TO ALTERNATOR POSITIVE HOOK UP IF NOT YOU HAVE BLOWED FUSE TO WIRE FEEDING ALTERNATOR COULD HAVE FAULTY BATTERY POSITIVE CABLE OR CABLES CORRODED NEED CLEANING.

How can I check my alternator on my 1999 Ford Ranger. The Ranger died on the side of the road today, and all that showed was to check the battery prior for about 10 minutes.


well...whenever the battery light comes on in a vehicle its almost always a charging problem,i would suggest replacing the alternator and charging the battery before starting it,alternators were meant to keep a battery charged NOT charge a battery, hope this helps

sounds like your alternator isn't charging the battery.take alternator to auto parts store to have it tested.
